Job Summary:

Serves as the technical bridge between our Customer, Sales team, Product management team and Operations team for our Converting business. Assesses customers' requirements versus business strategy and operational capabilities and develops custom solutions where synergies exist.

Engineer with significant Converting experience who is primarily responsible for prototype scale-up and optimization of converted products. Additionally, this role provides technical support for custom converting development of specialty adhesive and tape products. This individual has a critical role in a cross functional product development team (Including Sales, Innovation, Operations, Marketing, and Quality) to develop and commercialize new converted products. The Converting Engineer provides technical expertise to both internal and external customers in addition to mentoring and educating peers.

Essential Functions:
  • Lead technical discovery for Converting application by scoping product requirements and creating product constructions and drawings for new applications.
  • Create and modify product development strategies for new converted applications.
  • Develop and maintain product costing for new and existing commercial opportunities.
  • Design and source converting tooling required for new and existing Converting applications.
  • Provides technical support during product development and for commercially available products.
  • Leads multiple teams that include development scientists, sales and other required disciplines that are focused on translating customer needs to finished converted products. Provides expertise in collection and interpretation of the design input from the customer.
  • Performs variety of engineering tasks, which include but are not limited to preparation of experimental and validation activities for new and existing products.
  • Preparation of the developmental protocols, batch records, other documentation in chemical processing, coating and slitting/finishing areas.
  • Design and conduct experiments, collect data and perform data analysis and interpretation using statistical tools.
  • Generate reports and to make decisions and recommendations based on statistical interpretation of data.
  • Make identifiable and substantial contributions to continuous improvement through goals and involvement in the TQM process. Brings up any issues and improvement opportunities with our existing practices and systems.
  • Leads development of the new manufacturing technology which influences company wide competencies. Provides expert input in improvement of existing systems.
  • Effectively communicates with other departments (e.g. engineering, operations, R&D, sales, customer service, scheduling, planning, etc.). Helps coordinate and lead engineering meetings
  • Assists other associates in performing their tasks, as necessary.
  • Participates and assists with work coordination, training, and mentoring of peers, where applicable to the department manager. Acts as a lead engineer in the group.
  • Collaborates and leads the development of new processes and equipment.
  • Leads problem-solving and takes initiative to make changes to improve company profitability.
  • Coordinates technology transfer between facilities or similar equipment.
  • Provide technical support to internal and external customers on process and equipment capabilities and quality issues.
  • Represents the organization in a professional and positive manner to associates, external customers, and vendors.

Job Specifications:
  • Requires Bachelors degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in converting manufacturing. Experience in a cGMP environment is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of product development experience.
  • Understanding of the converting processes and technology.
  • Ability to utilize AutoCAD to design parts and tooling
  • Computer literacy with good working knowledge in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of the SPC and statistical software packages like Minitab is preferred.
  • Ability to develop and present effective technical presentations to internal and external customers.
  • Experience working in an ISO environment. Understanding of cGMP requirements is preferred.
  • Experience in handling multiple projects and programs concurrently.
  • Must be flexible to work different shifts as required by assignments.
  • Must be able to travel to customers, vendors and sister companies >30% of the time.

Physical Demands:

Physical exertion such as periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities should be expected; occasional lifting of moderately heavy items (objects over 50 pounds).

Environmental:

Work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts requiring special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, machines, and irritant chemicals; may be required to use personal protective equipment such as masks, uniforms, blues, hairnets, gloves, safety shoes, safety glasses/goggles, shields, etc.
