Controls Engineer - 633615
Location: Houston, TX (Hybrid)
A leading engineering firm is seeking a Controls Engineer to join their Houston team. This position focuses on delivering process control systems including DCS/PLC/SCADA/HMI programming, network and hardware design, instrumentation/electrical systems, and project startup support. This is a hybrid role, offering flexibility with on-site and remote work.
Key Responsibilities
Technical
- Design and implement control systems using DCS/PLC/SCADA/HMI platforms.
- Develop network architecture and hardware design for process automation systems.
- Support system check-out, commissioning, and startup.
- Prepare technical documentation: user requirements, control narratives, test plans, architecture diagrams, etc.
- Conduct rigorous testing to ensure accuracy, safety, and compliance.
Project Execution
- Track deliverables and timelines; report progress to project managers.
- Identify and resolve project challenges and risks.
- Participate in internal and client meetings; address scope and change requests.
- Provide feedback on lessons learned and continuous improvement opportunities.
Client Engagement & Business Development
- Foster strong working relationships with client contacts on assigned projects.
- Provide input to project proposals, estimates, and scope expansion opportunities.
Operations & Team Collaboration
- Set and pursue goals aligned with project and business objectives.
- Apply sound engineering judgment, risk management, and financial awareness.
- Collaborate with team members; share knowledge and best practices.
- Maintain clear, professional written and verbal communication.
Current Project Focus
- Lead development efforts using Ignition SCADA, focusing on system architecture, communication protocols, and security.
- Build scalable, automated SCADA solutions primarily using Ignition Perspective.
- Interface with 3rd-party vendors on behalf of clients.
- Support field sensor commissioning and ongoing SCADA application management.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (preferred disciplines: Electrical, Controls, Chemical, Computer, or Mechanical).
Required Experience
- 2+ years in control system projects covering design, development, commissioning, and training.
- Hands-on experience with Ignition SCADA and scripting (Python, JavaScript, etc.).
- Familiarity with CirrusLink MQTT, Modbus protocols, and various communication standards.
- Proficiency in standard programming methods: Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams.
- Strong ability to interpret technical drawings and documentation (P&IDs, I/O lists, narratives, etc.).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word).
