Position: Controls Application Engineer

As a Controls Application Engineer on our team, you will be responsible for supporting BMS sales and operations by reviewing project scopes, timelines, and cost estimates to ensure alignment with client and company goals. You will participate in project kick-off meetings, assemble submittal packages, and develop and update control system drawings and As-Built documentation. Reporting to the Controls Engineering Manager and working with Project Managers, you'll develop BMS applications (e.g., Niagara, Distech), help refine engineering standards and provide remote support to project and field teams. You will also be involved in all aspects of installing, servicing, and supporting Building Automation Systems (BAS), along with providing support across multiple engineering functions within the Controls Engineering group.
Controls Application Engineering - Collaborate with sales engineers during the proposal process by reviewing project scope, cost sheets, and timelines to ensure alignment with Mantis BMS engineering standards and financial goals.
- Participate in project kick-off meetings as part of the formal handoff from sales to operations.
- Assemble submittal documentation for controls projects based on estimates and construction documents.
- Work with Sales & Operations teams to develop and submit project drawings, create As-Built documentation, and update drawings throughout the construction process.
- Report to the Controls Engineering Manager, with project-specific direction provided by individual Project Managers.
- Develop BMS applications across multiple platforms (e.g., Niagara, Distech) for use by project operations teams in the field.
- Support the development and enforcement of engineering standards for programming, alarming, tagging, history management, and database creation.
- Provide remote technical support to Project Managers and Field Engineers during project execution.
Controls Installation & Project Management - Service and support existing building control systems.
- Creation and review of project drawings, including BMS construction drawings and submittals.
- Material purchasing for project requirements.
- Project management throughout the life of the project, ensuring that timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
- Startup and commissioning of complete building control systems, ensuring all systems are functioning as intended.
- Installation of building control components (controllers, panels, sensors, etc.) and low-voltage control panels.
- Collaboration with subcontractors, coordinating work to ensure timely project completion according to codes, standards, and contract requirements.
- Perform point-to-point checkouts and software/hardware calibration for proper equipment and system operation.
- Perform low-voltage cable installation and termination as needed for smaller projects.
- Take part in project commissioning activities, including daily meetings and documenting results.
- Programming Tridium/Distech controllers to meet project specifications and client needs.
Qualifications - 10+ years of experience in the engineering field, preferably in Building Automation or Controls Engineering.
- 5+ years of BMS experience, with data center experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of DDC control theory & HVAC applications and the ability to apply these principles to real-world scenarios.
- Experience with servers, network equipment, and IoT practices, specifically for BMS applications.
- 2+ years of experience with Niagara platform (Niagara N4 certification is preferred), and familiarity with Distech field controllers and GFX programming.
- Construction project management experience, including coordination and collaboration with multiple teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Visio, with experience in using it for creating technical drawings and project documentation.
Competencies - Must be able to work independently and in a team, handling multiple tasks across different projects.
- Ability to carry, set up, and climb an 8-foot ladder and work safely in hard-hat areas, near exposed electrical wiring.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify problems and develop effective solutions.
- Knowledge of the construction contracting industry, especially in MEP fields, with experience in mission-critical environments a plus.
- Understanding of Mechanical and Electrical equipment in typical Data Center applications.
- Basic networking knowledge, including manipulating PC settings to set up and commission devices on a network.
- Ability to handle state and federal security screening and out-of-state travel (up to 75%) as required for projects.
$120,000 - $130,000 a year
