Our San-Diego client in the Real Estate industry is seeking a Controller/Sr. Controller who will lead and oversee the accounting and tax departments, providing strategic direction to ensure efficient operations across three distinct platforms within the organization. These departments serve hundreds of legal entities, requiring both a high level of oversight and specialized management.
This role reports directly to the CFO and will manage the Director of Accounting and the Director of Tax. The ideal candidate will be a strong, proven leader with the ability to manage teams, foster cross-departmental relationships, and drive company initiatives forward.
The successful candidate will be adept at problem-solving, time management, and project management. They must be able to adapt to changing priorities, communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, and contribute to the ongoing success and growth of the organization.
Salary: $170k to $200k base + generous bonus & benefits package

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight to the accounting and tax departments.
- Directly manage the Director of Accounting and Director of Tax.
- Ensure departmental workflows, systems, and deliverables are aligned with organizational goals and specific departmental needs.
- Assess staffing needs and manage the recruitment, training, and performance of accounting and tax teams.
- Identify areas for operational improvement and recommend resource allocation to optimize efficiency.
- Partner with senior leadership to support and advance company goals and objectives.
Accounting and Financial Reporting
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and systems to ensure compliance with GAAP and entity-specific requirements.
- Ensure the department meets internal and external deadlines for financial reporting.
- Analyze complex accounting transactions and provide solutions for non-routine scenarios.
- Oversee corporate financials and lead forecasting efforts to align with company strategy.
Treasury Management
- Lead the treasury team and ensure the implementation of best practices for cash management and liquidity.
Tax Oversight
- Collaborate with the tax department to ensure timely preparation and accuracy of year-end financials and delivery to external preparers.
- Oversee tax-related workflows and help develop processes that incorporate industry best practices.
General Duties
- Work closely with the CFO to provide strategic guidance across various company functions.
- Support the CFO and senior management with ad-hoc projects as needed.
- Assist in the review and completion of Joint Venture documentation, particularly concerning capitalization and accounting/tax matters.
Job Requirements:
- Strong preference for Real Estate industry experience - multifamily and RE development first tier, residential second tier
- Some exposure to tax (public accounting or industry) is nice to have
- CPA or public accounting foundation is nice to have
