Controller to establish financial policies, streamline processes, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and interact with all levels of the organization to support our mission and strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision
- Provide direct supervision and support for the Accounting Team, ensuring efficient processes and strong general accounting practices.
- Hire, train, develop, and appraise staff effectively, taking corrective action as needed and consulting with HR where appropriate.
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Oversee budget and forecast preparation for grants and contracts, consolidating financial information and advising directors on results.
- Manage budget variance reporting, providing the CFO with monthly updates on financial performance.
- Identify and recommend cost-savings initiatives for program activities and the agency.
Policy & Compliance
- Establish, monitor, and enforce policies and procedures to guide financial decisions.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by staying current on regulations and best practices.
- Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard the agency's assets and manage risk.
Reporting & Audits
- Coordinate the preparation of financial statements (including cash flow) for a diverse group of stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the CFO to plan for required audits, such as annual financial audits and ad hoc grant/contract audits.
- Support preparation of audit materials and oversee necessary activities with the Accounting Team.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable/collections, grants management, and payroll.
- Coordinate and prepare monthly journal entries and correcting entries, reviewing expenditures before posting to the General Ledger.
- Allocate shared costs to grants, monitoring and revising as needed.
- Review reconciliations of various General Ledger accounts.
Collaboration & Training
- Work closely with Program Directors, the Accounting Supervisor, and other agency staff to develop forecasts, budgets, and budget revisions.
- Provide ongoing technical assistance and training to program staff on best practices for financial management systems.
- Keep up-to-date on relevant technologies to enhance innovation and maintain compliance.
Grants & Special Programs
- Monitor salaries and expenses charged to grants, ensuring alignment with budgets.
- Oversee State Food activity (e.g., meal counts, purchases, menus) for compliance, preparing annual applications and monthly billings.
Other Duties
- Represent the organization in the community to enhance collaboration, brand visibility, and reputation.
- Assist the CFO with investment and endowment analyses, as well as special financial projects and presentations.
- Undertake other duties or projects as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications and Skills:
Technical Expertise
- Demonstrated skills in general accounting and federal grant accounting.
- Thorough knowledge of GAAP and proficiency with Abila MIP Software.
- Intermediate to advanced skills in accounting software, MS Office (especially Excel), and spreadsheet modeling.
Analytical & Organizational Skills
- Excellent problem-solving abilities with a results-driven focus.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to coordinate tasks across multiple teams.
Communication & Collaboration
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also thriving in a cooperative team environment.
- Comfortable engaging with people at all levels of the organization and community.
Professionalism & Leadership
- Proven experience managing and developing accounting teams.
- Commitment to maintaining a high level of integrity and confidentiality in all financial matters.
Educational Requirement and Experience:- Bachelor's Degree in Finance or Accounting (CPA preferred).
- Five or More Years of Experience managing an accounting function in a not-for-profit environment, including federal and private grants management.
- Nonprofit, Association, or Government Agency Experience is a plus, particularly in federal grants.
