Job Summary:

The Controller will oversee all financial and accounting activities for the construction company, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulatory standards, and strategic financial planning. This role will play a critical part in supporting operations, analyzing costs, and improving profitability across projects. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in construction accounting, strong leadership skills, and a hands-on approach to financial management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the company's accounting operations including GL, AP, AR, payroll, and job costing
  • Develop and maintain project accounting processes to ensure accurate job costing and reporting
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports
  • Manage the annual budgeting and forecasting process in coordination with operations and executive leadership
  • Monitor cash flow, project profitability, and financial KPIs to support company goals
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and any industry-specific requirements
  • Coordinate with external auditors, banks, and tax consultants as needed
  • Implement internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard company assets
  • Review and approve project budgets, change orders, and financial performance
  • Provide strategic financial insights to leadership to aid in decision-making
  • Lead and develop the accounting team, ensuring high performance and accountability

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a construction environment
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including WIP, job costing, retainage, and revenue recognition
  • Proficient in construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Proven leadership ability and team management experience
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with a hands-on work ethic

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with bonding, insurance audits, and multi-entity operations
  • Knowledge of project management workflows and collaboration with project managers
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
