Job Summary:
The Controller will oversee all financial and accounting activities for the construction company, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulatory standards, and strategic financial planning. This role will play a critical part in supporting operations, analyzing costs, and improving profitability across projects. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in construction accounting, strong leadership skills, and a hands-on approach to financial management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of the company's accounting operations including GL, AP, AR, payroll, and job costing
- Develop and maintain project accounting processes to ensure accurate job costing and reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports
- Manage the annual budgeting and forecasting process in coordination with operations and executive leadership
- Monitor cash flow, project profitability, and financial KPIs to support company goals
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and any industry-specific requirements
- Coordinate with external auditors, banks, and tax consultants as needed
- Implement internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard company assets
- Review and approve project budgets, change orders, and financial performance
- Provide strategic financial insights to leadership to aid in decision-making
- Lead and develop the accounting team, ensuring high performance and accountability
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a construction environment
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including WIP, job costing, retainage, and revenue recognition
- Proficient in construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint, Procore, or similar)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Proven leadership ability and team management experience
- Highly organized and detail-oriented with a hands-on work ethic
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with bonding, insurance audits, and multi-entity operations
- Knowledge of project management workflows and collaboration with project managers
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
