Position Title: Controller
Reports To: Director of Finance
Role and Purpose: The Controller is a key member of the finance team, responsible for managing the school's financial operations. This position works closely with the Director of Finance to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records, compliance with regulations, and efficient financial processes. The Controller will supervise the HR Manager, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable staff and oversee payroll, benefits administration, and the annual audit process.
Responsibilities:
Accounting Operations:
Oversee the Accounts Payable function, ensuring timely and accurate processing of invoices and payments and transmission of year-end 1099s
Oversee the Accounts Receivable function, mainly the reconciliation of AR to student billing accounts
Review and reconcile bank statements, ensuring all transactions are properly recorded
Maintain the general ledger and prepare journal entries, including account reconciliations and monthly closings
Supervise the HR Manager, including overseeing payroll processing, benefits administration, and compliance with employment regulations
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
Assist the Director of Finance in preparing and analyzing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Help prepare and update monthly cash flow projections
Develop and maintain financial reports to track key performance indicators
Analyze financial data and provide insights to support decision-making
Audit & Compliance:
Assist the Director of Finance with the annual independent audit, preparing necessary documentation and working with the audit firm
Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, regulations, and tax laws. Including the annual Form 990 filing review and tie-out, ensuring data integrity and regulatory compliance.
Other Responsibilities:
Oversee the annual 403(b) audit and ensure compliance with plan requirements, Including the review and tie-out of the annual Form 5500 and Form 5500 Other Benefits filing, ensuring data integrity and regulatory compliance
Reconcile donations with Advancement Team records
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance Experience or Certifications.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting
Five years of financial accounting experience
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
Strong understanding of GAAP with non-profit accounting principles
Proficiency in accounting software, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), and Google Workspace applications
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting
Prior experience with Veracross or other Independent School accounting software
Previous experience with ADP or other payroll processing software
Prior supervisory experience
Experience in a non-profit or educational setting is preferred, particularly at an independent school
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
