Position Summary:

The Controls Specialist is a multi-level position (Levels 1 through 3) designed for professionals with 0 to 10 years of experience in control systems, electrical systems, and field support within power generation environments. The role supports ongoing projects involving instrumentation, control system design, field implementation, and technical support. Candidates will be expected to work in both office and field environments, including site walkdowns and startup activities. The position includes travel depending on project needs, especially for mid- to senior-level roles.

Key Responsibilities (All Levels):
  • Support and transition across multiple projects of varying sizes.
  • Perform site walkdowns, including documentation and field condition verification.
  • Check cables, wiring, and field connections to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Prepare and update control system conceptual designs and layout drawings.
  • Develop and maintain I/O lists and control narratives.
  • Assist or lead (depending on level) in system startups and commissioning activities.
  • Provide cost estimating support within control system sub-disciplines.
  • Collaborate with plant staff, engineering teams, and external vendors.
  • Configure and design graphics in one or more platforms such as Ovation, Foxboro, ABB, or PLC-based systems.
Required Skills & Expertise:
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems and industrial control environments.
  • Proficiency in computer-based platforms and engineering tools.
  • Experience with field support and system troubleshooting.
  • Ability to interpret and develop control system documentation, markups, and narratives.
  • Knowledge of project workflows, cost estimation, and process optimization.
  • Familiarity with developing and managing I/O lists.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills with cross-functional teams.
Experience Levels:
  • Level 1 (Entry): 0-5 years of experience; typically supports smaller projects with supervision.
  • Level 2 (Intermediate): 5-7 years of experience; manages mid-sized projects and may lead portions of site support and documentation.
  • Level 3 (Senior): 7-10 years of experience; leads large or complex projects, mentors junior staff, and oversees field coordination and high-level design efforts.
Work Environment:
  • Coal-fired power plant environment; time split between office settings and fieldwork inside the plant.
  • Exposure to industrial conditions including heat, noise, and confined spaces.
  • Travel may be required, especially for Level 2 and 3 roles.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk, climb stairs, and ladders.
  • Frequent kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching.
  • Capable of wearing necessary PPE and working in field environments safely.
