The Controls Engineer will develop, implement, and support PLC and HMI control systems for industrial machinery. This role involves interpreting customer specifications, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams to create high-quality, reliable control systems that meet customer standards. The Controls Engineer will collaborate closely with electrical and mechanical engineers, as well as production and installation teams, to ensure successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program, integrate, and install PLC and embedded control systems for industrial machinery.
- Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure seamless system interfaces.
- Validate electrical and pneumatic devices to meet customer acceptance standards.
- Calibrate, test, and troubleshoot control circuits, components, and instrumentation.
- Design and document PLC control systems from concept to installation.
- Troubleshoot process control issues and develop solutions to improve system performance.
- Assist in defining project scope, strategy, and deliverables for automation projects.
- Develop project specifications, estimates, and justifications.
- Maintain configuration control of current PLC source code.
- Create technical documentation, including standard operating procedures and machine operating instructions.
- Provide on-site or remote technical support to field technicians during equipment commissioning.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent.
- 3-5 years of experience in controls engineering, with a focus on industrial automation.
- Strong ability to validate machinery against customer acceptance standards.
- Proficiency in programming PLCs using at least one IEC 61131-3 language (Ladder or Structured Text preferred).
- Familiarity with Rockwell and/or Siemens automation systems.
- Knowledge of servo and A/C motor systems, including programming, troubleshooting, and tuning.
- Experience with PID control loops.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics, and develop or modify control programs accordingly.
- Strong technical writing skills for creating clear and accurate documentation.
- Effective communicator and collaborative team player.
- Interest in the design, production, and troubleshooting of high-speed machinery.
- Willingness to expand into robotics controls as needed.
