Consultant Microbiologist - NE England - Perm/Locum FTC
Triple West Medical has been appointed by an NHS Trust in North East England to recruit a Consultant Microbiologist for a substantive post. The Trust is also considering a Locum Fixed Term Contract for at least 12 months. There is an opportunity for the right candidate to serve as the Clinical Lead and Deputy Director of IPC.
The NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community health services to approximately 550,000 residents across multiple sites. It is committed to delivering high-quality care and continually improving patient experience.
The advertised Consultant post in Infection (Medical Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) is full-time (10.4 programmed activities). This is a replacement role; the successful candidate will share responsibilities with existing Consultant Microbiologists, Specialists, and a Specialty Doctor. The appointee will collaborate closely with other consultants and aim to uphold high service standards. Support for the Medical Director, who is also the Trust DIPC, is expected, with potential for clinical leadership to develop a microbiology center of excellence.
Brief Duties / Responsibilities
- Liaison with clinicians, hospital staff, and GPs regarding diagnosis, management, and infection prevention.
- Coordinate with Public Health England and the Health Protection Unit for infection management and notifiable disease reporting.
- This is a full-time role; a job plan will be established within three months of employment.
- The appointee may choose to focus on specific clinical areas based on interest or expertise.
- Provide advice and interpret test results within the department.
- Participate in weekly antimicrobial ward rounds and daily ICU ward rounds.
- Implement and participate in medical and multidisciplinary clinical audits, including C.diff MDT, OPAT MDT, Orthopedic MDT, and Endocarditis MDT.
- Contribute to policies, procedures, and guidelines related to microbiology and other departments.
- Work with infection control nurses to manage day-to-day infection control across the Trust.
- Investigate infection control incidents, participate in root cause analysis, and implement reduction strategies for hospital-acquired infections.
- Engage in decontamination issues and ensure laboratory operations meet UKAS standards with technical support.
