The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. We are currently seeking a ICD Coding Consultant to work for our Chicago office - on a remote basis.

Starting base salary = $70,000 - $87,500 (commensurate with related experience).

The American Hospital Association serves as the official U.S. clearinghouse on coding ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and HCPCS level II codes. As a member of the association's Central Office coding team, the Consultant, ICD 10 CM PCS Coding advises providers and coding professionals in the health information field on official medical coding principles and offers guidance on emerging issues. The Consultant also assists the Managing Editor by researching and drafting materials for quarterly publication.

  1. Research and draft responses to requests for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding advice received by the Central Office coding team, so that consistent and meaningful data is reported in all health care settings in accordance with established coding guidelines.
  2. Review and analyze comments on drafts of coding responses to ensure accuracy and consistency of advice. Provide objective conclusions based on understanding of research and coding guidelines.
  3. Maintain and utilize the internal database of coding responses, retrievable by text or numerical search, to ensure consistency in drafting responses to similar questions previously answered.
  4. Contribute to the quarterly newsletter, Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS published by the Central Office, the official clearinghouse for ICD-10 coding questions.
  5. Collaborate with coding team to identify, research and draft agenda items for the Editorial Advisory board. This process includes clinical research, discussions with clinical specialists, and knowledge of coding principles, to provide sufficient background information for the board's discussion and deliberations.

Minimum 5 years of experience with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS within a hospital environment. Previous experience in a role similar to a coding supervisor, lead coder, coding trainer/educator, coding auditor or coding compliance professional providing guidance and expertise related to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. Must have passed Registered Health Information Administration, or Registered Health Information Technician exam.
5-7 years' coding experience
