Consultant Radiologist - general radiologist with specialist interest in Gynaecology Imaging

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and committed radiologist to join our friendly and dynamic team within the Radiology Department at Colchester General Hospital (which is part of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust).

1. This post is a general radiology consultant position with about 50% of sessions dedicated to subspecialty interest in gynaecology imaging.

Several sessions would be devoted to general radiology including acute inpatient and A+E CT reporting, general and inpatient acute MRI reporting, and duty room or "hot seat".

The candidate would be a member of the general radiology on-call (1:15-1:16 depending on numbers of radiologists).

Home reporting is an option with the majority of full-time radiologists reporting one session or one day of outpatient reporting from home.

Additional reporting on top of 10PA role is available with extra sessions, ultrasound lists, and pay per scan for additional out-of-hours reporting (subject to conditions).

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL

The post holder's duties will be primarily based at Colchester General Hospital. The timetable will include 8.5 direct clinical care (DCC) sessions and 1.5 supporting programmed activities (SPA). One SPA is usually off-site. The candidate will be expected to share with colleagues a commitment to general reporting, Duty radiology, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, MRI, and CT depending on interests and experience.

The post-holder will:

  • Work with colleagues to provide a comprehensive imaging service. The timetable is flexible and will be agreed upon.
  • Provide specialist radiological advice and services, including MDT participation.
  • Ensure compliance with ionising and radiation regulations, acting as radiation protection supervisor.
  • Take personal responsibility for the clinical care of referred patients, providing advice to clinical colleagues.
  • Supervise, train, and support the professional development of radiographic staff, radiology SpRs, and other departmental staff.
  • Attend departmental meetings and contribute to governance and service development.

Job responsibilities

RESEARCH, AUDIT, AND TEACHING

The post-holder will organize and supervise teaching for junior staff and students, supporting research, audit, and ongoing education. They will participate in clinical audits, develop protocols, and contribute to departmental governance. The role involves on-call duties, including overnight cover from home for emergencies, and participation in training and CPD activities. Maintaining an up-to-date job plan and personal development plan, and engaging in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching, are essential components.

Person Specification Interview
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • FRCR (or equivalent)
  • Completion of general radiology training or within 6 months of CCT at interview date
  • Appropriate subspecialty training
  • GMC registration with a license to practice
  • Experience in NHS diagnostic radiology
  • Computer literacy, including CRIS and OrderComms
  • Senior Registrar or Year 5 Specialist Registrar (or equivalent), ready for full Consultant responsibilities
  • Additional subspecialty interest/experience to complement the department
