Position Overview:
The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed and competitive cost estimates for a variety of projects, with a focus on earthwork, sitework, grading, excavation, and civil infrastructure. This role works closely with project managers, field teams, subcontractors, and clients to ensure accurate, well-organized proposals that align with company standards and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze drawings, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and prepare detailed scopes of work for bidding purposes.
- Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to solicit competitive pricing.
- Prepare bid packages, proposals, and cost summaries for review.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client meetings to gather project details and evaluate conditions.
- Evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes to determine the best fit for project needs.
- Collaborate with project management and field operations teams during handoff to ensure smooth project execution.
- Maintain and update historical cost databases and unit pricing.
- Identify and assess potential risks and opportunities within project bids.
- Assist in value engineering exercises to ensure competitive and economical bids.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience as an estimator in the construction industry, preferably with a focus on earthwork, grading, excavation, or heavy civil projects.
- Proficient in blueprint reading, construction drawings, and specifications.
- Experience with estimating software (eg, HeavyBid, PlanSwift, Bluebeam, HCSS) is preferred.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, site development, materials, and industry standards.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive.
