Computer Systems Analyst/Engineer
This position provides support for Southern Company Services Transmission's energy management
systems (EMS). These systems are leveraged by transmission control centers (OPCO TCC's) as well as the
power coordination center (PCC) and their respective back-office personnel to ensure reliable management
of the bulk electric system. This position is responsible for the implementation, execution, and
improvement of operational processes to ensure system availability for all computer systems supported by
the EMS department.
The successful candidate will provide 24x7 operational support for the EMS/SCADA Systems (current
Spectrum Power 3/future OSI Monarch) and other systems that support the operational needs of our
customers. This role will focus on learning customer's use cases and working within the EMS system to
enhance or develop systems to achieve desired results. Understanding operational concepts and computer
technologies will enable the candidate to help the customer extract meaningful data, tune the SCADA
(Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) system for end users, and work with the EMS vendor to develop
new solutions. Understanding power systems at a level to engage with GPC engineers is key when
facilitating modeling specialized applications to meet customer's specific needs. Systems we maintain run
on RHEL Linux servers, Windows servers, and Windows desktop computers that are built and maintained
by the EMS department or provided by solution vendors. EMS also leverage tools such as (Veeam), source
code management (GitHub), package deployment (RPM/Yum, SCCM), solution and performance
monitoring (Zenoss, ArcSight), and incident or change management (Remedy).
Required Knowledge:
• Excellent communication and organizational skills are required. This role will work with
multiple other teams and vendor support groups to administer systems, coordinate releases, and
support deployed solutions.
• Understanding Power Systems and ability to translate to system configuration and modeling
• Basic computer scripting and/or programming skills. PowerShell, Python or Shell scripting
familiarity a plus.
• Proficiency with Windows desktop use including basic administration and Microsoft Tools
• Understanding of Windows server administration and/or Linux (RHEL) administration
• Understanding of computer hardware including physical/virtual servers, desktop maintenance,
network and security concepts, and application support.
• Must be able to obtain Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and Insider Threat Program (ITP)
security clearance as required.
Experience and Education:
• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
experience.
• Experience supporting and troubleshooting computer systems in an enterprise setting.
• Knowledge of electric utility and or Transmission Operations is a plus
• General understanding of computer system infrastructure, operations, and security.

core business and its needs.
• Must have analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities as well as delegation skills as
appropriate.
• Ability to bring consensus and buy-in among people with different views and agendas.
• Ability to grasp complex Energy Management Systems operational issues, risk factors, and
business drivers.

• Willingness to be on call as needed 24x7
• Willingness to adhere to stringent federal and corporate requirements regarding how work is
performed and security of EMS systems and information.
• Travel (10%-15% of time) to attend Southern Company functions and maintain system
hardware.
• Successful candidate will have to undergo additional screenings (specifically Insider Threat Protection - ITP) in addition to the background/drug screening.
