Job Description
The Computer Support Specialist serves as a member of the Information Technology (IT) group and is responsible for providing high quality helpdesk services to Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech (VT). The primary function of this position is to manage incidents and service requests related to IT functions of the organization and act as a single point of contact for users. This role is also responsible for hardware and software support for user computers throughout the entire system lifecycle, Audio/Video (AV) systems in conference rooms, and tracking IT related asset inventory. This position will also be responsible for providing orientation for new users and assuring system compliance with both VT and institute policies and procedures related to computer security.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and experience in a customer support environment.
• Detailed and comprehensive knowledge of computer hardware and software.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Windows 10, MacOS, respective applications and user management.
Knowledge of endpoint management frameworks such as HCL BigFix, Jamf, or Microsoft Intune, etc.
• Strong customer services skills and ability to easily communicate technical issues to a wide audience.
• Demonstrated time management skills and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to take initiative in problem solving and performing independent research to provide solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Linux.
• Experience working in a help desk environment.
• Experience with automated image deployment.
• Experience installing and maintaining audiovisual systems in an educational environment.
• Experience setting up virtual meetings via Zoom/Google Meet/etc.
• Experience with backup systems like CrashPlan/Code42, Google Drive, Time Machine, etc.
• Experience working with computers in an Active Directory/Group Policy environment.
• Experience with network/phone connections.

Additional Information
Due to the nature of this support position, some on-site presence will be required. Fully remote work is not an option for this position.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
