The Position:
Works under the direct supervision of the Ambulatory Outpatient Coding and Reimbursement Manager, Health Information Management. Codes Ambulatory Outpatient clinical visits for the Outpatient setting. Utilizes the ICD-10-CM, CPT, and CPT Category II coding classification systems. Ensures proper assignment and completion of an E/M Level, Preventive Service, Diagnosis and Procedure Coding on all cases. Assists in training of new coding technicians when appropriate. Promotes the Health System's guest relations' policy. Complies with all Federal and State regulations and accrediting bodies including but not limited to HIPAA and JCAHO.
Duties:
- Reviews all ambulatory outpatient medical records and assigns the proper ICD-10-CM, CPT, and CPT Category II codes in accordance with AHA coding principles and regulations, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other third party payors.
- Completes appropriate sections of the medical record abstract for each record: transfers specific information relative to the outpatient episode, to include E/M Level, Preventive Services, diagnosis and procedure codes, and facilitates data entry activities into the Health System's computer system for reimbursement.
- Ensures that all ambulatory outpatient visits are accounted for by reconciling daily and weekly reports to documents received for coding.
- Utilizes the computer systems to accurately abstract all pertinent clinical information by using: 3M, ClinTrac/SoftMed, IDX, and Sunrise and carry out job requirements.
- Assists with periodic quality assurance studies by gathering and reporting valid and accurate statistical or workload data to the manager.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or its equivalent is required. One year with Outpatient coding experience is preferred. Valid certification offered by one of the following credentialing bodies is required: AAPC, AHIMA or NCCT. Must be knowledgeable of regulatory requirements. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products as well as 3M Encoder and Grouping Software preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
Must maintain a valid credential offered by one of the following credentialing bodies: AAPC, AHIMA, NAHP or NCCT.
