Job DetailsThe CNC Lathe Programmer will be responsible for programming, setting up, and optimizing multi-axis CNC lathes used in the production of tight-tolerance aerospace and defense components. This role requires deep technical knowledge, hands-on machining expertise, and a commitment to quality and process control in a high-specification manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop, edit, and optimize CNC lathe programs using CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Fusion 360) for aerospace and defense components.
Set up and prove out first-article parts on advanced CNC lathes, including live tooling and sub-spindle operations.
Select appropriate tools, speeds, and feeds to meet strict tolerance and surface finish requirements.
Read and interpret aerospace/defense technical drawings and specifications (including AS9100 standards and GD&T).
Troubleshoot machining and programming issues in a fast-paced production environment.
Collaborate with engineering, QA, and machinists to ensure process stability and compliance with customer specs.
Support continuous improvement initiatives in cycle time reduction, quality, and tooling strategies.
Maintain documentation, setups, and program archives for repeatability and traceability.
Qualifications:
Minimum 7+ years of CNC lathe programming and setup experience, preferably in aerospace or defense manufacturing.
Proficient with G-code programming and CAM software.
Deep understanding of multi-axis lathe capabilities (Y-axis, live tooling, sub-spindle).
Expertise in tight tolerance machining, inspection processes, and documentation requirements.
Familiarity with materials used in aerospace and defense (e.g., titanium, Inconel, aluminum alloys, stainless steel).
Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, GD&T, and precision measurement tools.
Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Ability to mentor and train junior team members.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in an AS9100 or ITAR-compliant environment.
Background in Swiss-type CNC lathes is a plus.
CAD proficiency (SolidWorks or similar) is a bonus.
Understanding of DoD specifications and traceability requirements.
