Clinical Research Nurse

1x 37.5 hrs/week - Fixed Term Contract for 12 months

This is an exciting opportunity for two registered nurses, educated to a degree level, with substantial clinical nursing experience to work in research delivery to cover a secondment and maternity leave. We are looking for someone who can multitask, is resourceful, patient-centred, and able to work in clinical settings as well as an office (IT, e-calendars, virtual meetings, data management, etc). Prior experience in research delivery is preferred.

The post holders will join our team and work towards the set-up, delivery, and follow-up of research studies across various specialties. Therefore, a sound clinical base, ability to process complex information, and confidence are required. Due to the nature of research, your workload will cover different specialties and may vary depending on the department's needs.

Gaining insight into research governance, delivery, and processes, which lead to evidence-based practice, is a valuable addition to your career and will enhance your communication, organizational skills, and multidisciplinary working.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within the Research Team at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, primarily promoting patient entry into clinical trials across the Trust. They will work within the Generic Research team with a focus on DOCC, and across other areas as needed. The role involves raising awareness, delivering, and following up on clinical trials to increase patient recruitment, aligning with National Institute for Health Research objectives.

Key responsibilities include recruiting, educating, and monitoring patients in clinical trials, maintaining accurate records, and collaborating with clinical teams and support departments to improve care quality and outcomes. Delivery of the service level agreement with the Thames Valley and South Midlands Clinical Research Network (TVSMCRN) is essential.

Contracts will be issued by Milton Keynes University Hospital on behalf of the TVSMCRN on a fixed-term basis, with extension dependent on funding.

Job responsibilities

Implement, develop, and facilitate the running of trials within the research team, as directed by the Research & Development Department, involving clinicians to meet the objectives of the TVSMCRN.

This includes:

  • Reviewing each trial protocol for resource implications.
  • Ensuring all regulatory approvals are obtained before study commencement (e.g., ethics committee and Trust R&D permission).
Communication

Promote trial involvement among clinical and patient communities; explain complex trials sensitively and empathetically to patients. Liaise with multidisciplinary teams before, during, and after trials.

Education

Participate in delivering and developing education and training on clinical trials for healthcare staff within Milton Keynes University Hospital and TVSMCRN. Disseminate research findings through presentations, posters, and publications.

Professional

Adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Practice and maintain registration on the Clinical Research Practitioner directory. Engage in professional development and participate in appraisals with senior staff.

Management

Work independently, manage your workload, adhere to timelines, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Participate in developing Trust procedures and policies as needed.

Person Specification Qualifications and Knowledge
  • NMC Registered Nurse with relevant post-registration experience to diploma level or equivalent.
  • Understanding of research methods and a research qualification.
  • Knowledge of or training in Good Clinical Practice.
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years' clinical experience.
  • Experience in clinical research or trials.
Skills
  • Organizational skills to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Analytical skills for complex data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and cannulation.

Salary: £37,338 to £44,962 per annum, pro-rata.
