JOB SUMMARY

Assists the Pharmacist by filling physician orders for medications for oral, rectal, topical and injectable use; mixes IV admixture solutions as required using aseptic technique in the Laminar Air Flow Hood if I.V. certified; types labels, prepares and files charge slips and performs other related duties.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel. This will include Care Transition Team activities and discharge planning.
  • Prepares intravenous solutions and admixtures if I.V. certified.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly.
  • Assists in filling prescriptions.
  • Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer or forwards them to Information Systems.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.
  • Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, and know to consult with the Pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.
  • Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filing various prescriptions ranging from the newborn to the elderly populations.
  • Recognizes inappropriate dosing based on available dosage forms for various age groups.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill ensuring that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled and stored, and not outdated.
  • Ensures compliance with USP .

BASIC SKILLS

  • Basic computer knowledge.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • High School diploma or the equivalent.
  • One (1) year related pharmacy experience and/or training or graduate of certified training program/healthcare careers college.
  • Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education, experience or subsequent training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to stand, sit, walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to discern colors.
