Description of Work General Statement of Duties: Provides group fitness instruction, monitors, educates patrons on fitness and safety, and maintains a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for class participants.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision and technical direction of the Program and Operations Manager.
Supervision Exercised: None
Responsibilities The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in this class. Duties may vary somewhat from position to position within a class.
- Teaches scheduled classes, beginning and ending on time; provides all expected components of a group exercise class; adequate warm-up, exercises, stretching and cool down.
- Instructs patrons on effective workout methods; explains proper techniques, demonstrates exercises; identifies different muscle groups, and teaches appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles.
- Prepares appropriate equipment, music, and handouts, if appropriate, for each class.
- Assists patrons, answers questions, and maintains a positive exercise experience for members and class participants.
- Keeps management informed of customer and facility needs; including any safety and maintenance concerns.
- Ensures that safety standards are met, and that department and facility policies are adhered to.
- Ensures that scheduled class continues if unable to work by finding a suitable substitute for the class.
- Instructs class with energy and enthusiasm to motivate participants.
- Provides appropriate communication to Supervisor by phone, written form, email, text or in-person of any pertinent information including responding back to correspondence from Supervisor.

- Working ability to provide first aid or emotional support for an injured or unhappy participant.
- Working ability to deal with difficult patrons.
- Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology and training principles.
- Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies and the incorporation of music, tempo, cueing techniques and rhythm.
- Choreography and music skills.
- Ability to be professional and motivate class participants.
- Ability to cooperate and work well with other staff members.
Work Enviornment:
Duties are performed in an indoor public facility.
Physical Requirements Necessary to Perform the Job:
- Must be able to lift weight in the amount appropriate for use in classes.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and kneel to perform and/or demonstrate the class requirements.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a nationally recognized certified instructor or able to obtain within six months or hiring.
- Must be current with CPR certification.
- Previous instruction experience preferred.
