General overview:

Camp SOAR (Special Outdoor Adaptive Recreation) is an overnight camp for children with special needs, ages 7-19. The purpose of camp is two-fold; to offer fun and social activities for the campers and respite for the families.


Campers are partnered with a one-to-one dedicated volunteer counselor who assists them in making the most of their Camp SOAR experience. Parents know their child is having a wonderful time, making new friends and gaining independence, while in a safe and caring environment.


Camp SOAR is run as two one-week sessions, July 12-18 and July 19-25 at a camping facility in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. The campers and staff all sleep in air-conditioned cabins and all meals are provided.


Position Purpose:

The camp Nurse will evaluate and treat campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, administer prescription and over-the-counter medications, keep a log of health center visits, and identify health problems serious enough to require a physician's attention.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Caring for the medical needs of campers and staff at Camp SOAR
  • Helps lead nurse oversee the health and wellness of approximately 45 campers with special needs and 65 staff.
  • Safeguarding the camper's and counselor's prescription medications; administering the medications at the prescribed dosages and hours.
  • Safeguarding and administering over-the-counter medications and first aid treatment as needed
  • Provide prescribed health care and/or first aide to campers and staff with general health concerns and document in Health Log. Communicate health concerns with parents. Alert appropriate camp staff to health concerns on a need-to-know basis.
  • Maintain health center record and camp health forms.
  • Be present at camper check-in of camp session to go over health care needs and medications with parents to ensure the proper care for campers during their week.
  • Reports to on-site lead nurse and camp director

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

  • LPN or RN
  • BLS CPR certification
  • Ideal candidate would live on camp site (in a building, no tents) and be on-site Sunday morning -Friday morning July 9-14 and/or July 16-21. We also train the counselors on the Saturday before the week starts, attendance on the Saturday is optional but strongly encouraged.
  • Prior experience with pediatric nursing desired but not required.
  • Strong nursing assessment abilities.
  • Responsible, hard-working, friendly and personable.

This position is paid a stipend for his/her services for the week based on experience.
