Job Description Summary & Additional Information

Organization's Summary Statement:

The Business Data Analyst will review, trend, and analyze campus energy consumption data in support of utility billing and reporting functions of the University's Facility Management Engineering and Energy (E&E) group. The position will also support data collection, reporting (internally to E&E groups and outside agencies), and evaluate data anomalies in utility consumption and related data. This position will review data collected with the Facility Performance unit and/or other university facility management units as applicable and assist with proper billing of self-support units to recover utility costs. The position will also collect and manage building and property data needed to support required data analysis.

Job Description:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Equivalent experience, in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the full performance of the job duties, may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis, with 30 college credits being equivalent to 1 year of experience.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience (with a degree) with large data sets and databases or six (6) years of experience (without a degree). Experience should include manipulation and evaluation of large data sets and coordination of internal reporting or, preferably, reporting associated with regulatory compliance.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Must have strong and demonstrable spreadsheet skills, including experience using advanced data manipulation formulas and pivot tables.
  • Must possess the ability to prepare and present reports and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must be adept and have professional experience using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for the purposes of manipulating and presenting data.
  • Must be able to organize, prioritize, and execute multiple assignments under specific time constraints.
  • Must have experience analyzing data sets and performing detailed quality assurance and quality checks on data to correct errors and ensure reporting accuracy.
  • Must have the ability to understand and interpret University policies and procedures in the areas of finance, purchasing, and/or related programs.
Physical Demands:
Primarily in an office environment. May be required to enter confined spaces such as mechanical/electrical rooms and industrial facilities such as combined heat and power (CHP) plants and central heating and cooling plants for short durations. This role is telework eligible, subject to supervisor approval.

Preferences:
  • Bachelor's degree in business, technical, or scientific field with demonstrated proficiency in manipulating, analyzing, and preparing reports with large data sets.
  • Experience linking Microsoft Excel data sets to databases, especially Microsoft Access, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience using MS Access for custom data queries and reporting.
  • Working knowledge and some experience with the development of MS Excel macros and Visual Basic (VBA).
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience working with utility/energy tracking data, billing, or large accounting system-based data sets is highly preferred.
Licenses/ Certifications:

The incumbent must possess a driver's license, as duties require the incumbent to travel to and from meetings and project sites both on and off campus. If driving a state vehicle, the incumbent must possess a valid MD Class C driver's license or equivalent with fewer than six (6) points.
