Position Summary
  • Provide a competitive athletic environment that empowers and inspires student athletes
  • Help to foster team building and an environment of reliability, adaptability and good sportsmanship.
  • Aide in the promotion of academic growth and achievement for athletes.
Qualifications
  • IHSA Coaching Certification (including applicable performance-enhancing substances, concussion, hate speech and harassment, and CPR/AED training)
Reports To
  • Assistant Principal for Athletics or Assistant Athletic Director of the building assigned.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of content and sport.
  • Assess skill and ability of athletes. Demonstrate knowledge of student athletes relating to their age and varied skill level.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of resources for coaches.
  • Create a team environment of respect and rapport in both coach-athlete and athlete-athlete interaction.
  • Establish a culture for learning, instilling the importance of skill, success, effort to win, and expectations of achievement.
  • Manage team procedures including coaching the varsity level and the supervision of lower-level assistant coaches.
  • Manage student athlete behavior in and out of season.
  • Organize and coordinate physical space.
  • Communicate, orally and in writing, with players, parents and Athletic Office expectations and procedures for the entire program.
  • Design coherent instruction and/or practices, group and team time. Engage all athletes in learning through individual activities, group and team instruction. Provide clear instruction and positive feedback.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adjusting practices, responding to athlete's needs and areas of concern.
  • Maintain accurate program records of awards, w/l, and statistics.
  • Communicate with media.
  • Contribute to Athletic Department and school by encouraging and supporting athletes in other sports by verbally encouraging them and presence at contests.
  • Collaborate with other Head Coaches, APA, and Building Administration in order to foster high-level goals for the program.
  • Reflect on coaching/performance in order to assess personal growth. Pursue Professional Development and continued growth through attendance at sport specific clinics.
  • Participate in assessment process and evaluate program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Principal for Athletics.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents such as correspondence, surveys and electronic media.
  • Ability to write professional communications.
  • Ability to present information effectively and to respond to questions from individuals and groups
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community members
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form
  • Ability to complete mathematical operations and apply concepts of basic mathematics
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to maintain current job skills as directed, especially in technology-related activities
  • Ability to perform essential duties with an awareness of school district requirements and School Board policies

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, the ability to withstand long-term use of video display terminals (VDT) is required.
  • The employee may occasionally lift up to 30 pounds such as reference books.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The pace of work tasks would be considered as fast.
  • Work is usually conducted at one job site, however, on occasion, this employee will be required to attend meetings, conferences, or workshops and events at other sites as assigned.
