Job Title:Bioinformatics Researcher 2

Department:FAES Molecular and Cellular Imaging Lab-Poelstra

Reporting to the Bioinformatics & Microscopy Lead of CFAES Analytical Services, the research associate will provide bioinformatics research support and teach applied bioinformatics to students and researchers at The Ohio State University. The Bioinformatics vertical primarily supports "omics" research, with a focus on genomic and transcriptomic data.


Job duties consist of the following:

Bioinformatics research support and service


• Conduct research in collaboration with faculty, graduate students, and postdocs by providing support with bioinformatics analyses; participate in publications.


• Serve as a knowledge resource for omics research and data analysis by providing consultations to OSU researchers.

Resource development


• Develop, implement, and document standardized, best-practice pipelines for a variety of omics data analyses.


• Write applied bioinformatics tutorials and SOPs and make them available to the research community.


• Strengthen relationships with partners such as the Ohio Supercomputer Center.

Teaching and training


• Organize and teach workshops and related educational activities to improve bioinformatics and coding skills among students and faculty.


• Co-teach graduate-level courses organized by the Bioinformatics vertical, and guest-lecture in courses organized by CFAES faculty.

Skill development


• Attend workshops, hackathons, and related activities to refine existing skills and learn new skills in bioinformatics.


• Stay current with bioinformatics research and methods.


• Stay informed about activities of our research community e.g. by attending CFAES research seminars.


Position located either at the Columbus or the Wooster campus of Ohio State University.


Minimum Education Required

Master's Degree or equivalent experience required; PhD preferred. 4-5 years of relevant experience required. 5-7 years of relevant experience preferred.

Required Qualifications


• MSc. degree in genetics, genomics, computational biology, or a closely related field.


• Experience with the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data in one or more relevant contexts, such as RNA-Seq, microbial metabarcoding, whole-genome assembly and annotation, comparative genomics, and shotgun metagenomics.


• Familiarity with common bioinformatics tools and databases.


• Experience with the Unix shell and shell scripting.


• Experience with working in remote computing environments, preferably using High-Performance Computing (HPC) centers.


• Experience with the R language.


Preferred Qualifications:


• A track record in reproducible science via well-documented, publicly available version control repositories.


• Experience with running and writing formal bioinformatics pipelines.


• Experience with an additional programming language, preferably Python.


• Experience with proteomics and metabolomics data analysis.


• Experience with teaching in formal and informal settings.


• Extensive knowledge of robust experimental design and various statistical technical techniques for data analysis.

The salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
