BioCMC Cell Line Development (Drug Substance) Internship Overview

The Biologics Drug Substance organization is a team of scientists driving scientific excellence and process development through innovative solutions. They are responsible for all Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control (CMC) cell line and bioprocess development activities for AbbVie's early-stage products. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to learn and work on key aspects of developing fundamental scientific understanding related to AbbVie's projects and processes, including exposure to innovative projects like applying machine learning models to improve the cell line development process.

This internship will be based in South San Francisco, CA.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Develop and implement innovative deep learning approaches using Omics (NGS) data from to predict optimal outcomes in our bioprocesses.
  • Exercise significant independence in selecting and applying appropriate computational methodologies for predictive modeling.
  • Collaborate with a senior scientist to prepare, clean, and preprocess input data, gaining insights into NGS (Next-Generation Sequencing) data analysis.
  • Analyze and interpret NGS datasets, applying foundational knowledge of sequencing theory to inform model development.
  • Present findings and progress to the department, effectively communicating methodologies, results, and potential impacts.
  • Learn and understand various aspects of cell line and bioprocess development, integrating computational approaches to enhance timelines and outcomes.

Qualifications

MinimumQualifications

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Strong background in machine learning and deep learning methodologies.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and experience with ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or other ML frameworks.
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in developing and implementing machine learning models for biological data is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies is a plus (not required).
  • Expected graduation date between December 2025 Dec 2026.
  • Data visualization skills are a plus.
  • Effective writer and communicator with ability to interact effectively with interdisciplinary scientists and engineers.
  • High attention to detail, creativity in problem solving, strong interpersonal skills.
