The Bilingual Special Education Program Director will provide leadership in managing and supervising a large and diverse Special Education Department. He/she must assist the Head of Schools and his/her administrative team in:

  1. Ensuring all students with disabilities access the general curriculum in the least restrictive and/or inclusionary setting.
  2. Carrying out all local, state, and federal regulatory responsibilities required for departmental compliance.
  3. Promoting the growth and professional development of both regular and special education teachers and staff.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Head of Schools in fulfilling all regulatory responsibilities and maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations, including coordinating the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students referred for services.
  2. Supervise, train, and direct the work of all Special Education professionals and support staff.
  3. Collaborate with the Head of Schools to evaluate the performance of all professional staff in the department.
  4. Oversee the development and coordination of curriculum goals, promote best practices in differentiated instruction, and assist in distributing and training staff on instructional materials in conjunction with the Director of Curriculum, Assessment, and Placement.
  5. Ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations and modifications in instruction and assessment, including citywide and state assessments.
  6. Maintain timely and accurate student records and reports.
  7. Maintain effective communication with students' parents, students, and staff involved in Special Education programs.
  8. Assist in developing and implementing school improvement plans.
  9. Collaborate with other departments and service providers to ensure the inclusion of all Special Education students in classes and activities.
  10. Support the implementation of literacy programs and behavior intervention models to align standards with effective teaching practices.
  11. Develop and monitor inclusive programs in collaboration with the Head of Schools, ensuring the effectiveness of services for students with disabilities within the least restrictive environment.
  12. Assist in building ETF with Individualized Educational Plans as needed.
  13. Perform whole-school functions such as discipline, hallway climate, and participate on an administrative team.
  14. Perform other administrative duties as requested by the Head of Schools.

Qualifications - Required:

  • Master's Degree in Education.
  • Three (3) years of urban teaching experience in special education at the secondary level.
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification in Special Education and at the secondary level.
  • Massachusetts Supervisor/Director or Administrator of Special Education license.
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics for effective work with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • A belief in all students' ability to reach proficiency, in inclusion models for Special Education, and in maintaining high standards for all students.
  • Ability to establish a culturally sensitive atmosphere that promotes growth, positive self-image, and equity.

Qualifications - Preferred:

  • Experience as Evaluation Team Leader or in other Special Education administrative roles.
  • Fluency in one of BPS's official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.

Terms: BASAS 9A, 209 days
