Position Type: Support Staff Date Posted: 9/19/2024 Location: Districtwide (High-Needs School) Date Available: 10/01/2024 Closing Date: Open Until Filled Additional Information: Show/Hide Flagstaff Unified School District Behavior Safety Tech (Multiple Positions) School Year Position Title: Behavior Safety Tech Department/Section: District Wide Supervisor: Assistant Director of Operations & Coordinator of ESS Posting Specific Detail Pay Grade: 71: $20.50 to $21.25 Schedule: 35 to 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday daily hours to be determined with assignment Benefits: Qualify for Arizona State Retirement System and the full FUSD retirement and insurance benefits Summary of Function The Behavior Safety Tech plays a key role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students, with a particular focus on those in behavior support programs. This position involves overseeing student behavior, offering guidance, and maintaining a safe and orderly environment throughout the school building and campus. Working collaboratively with school administrators, ESS staff, and the Lead School Safety Officer, the Behavior Safety Tech implements proactive strategies to address and prevent student behavior challenges. This role emphasizes creating a supportive and secure space where students can thrive, while managing noncompliance issues in a firm yet compassionate manner. The Behavior Safety Specialist must be prepared to handle stressful situations, including exposure to bodily fluids, and maintain both emotional and physical self-control while responding to incidents. This position is essential for fostering a safe learning environment and supporting students in their behavioral and social development. Qualifications Qualifications include: High School diploma or equivalent - required. Valid First Aid or CPR Certification - required within 30 days of hire Valid ICS 100, 200 & 700 Certifications - required within 30 days of hire Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card - required within 30 days of hire. CPI Training obtained within first 30 days of hire Bilingual - preferred. Duties and Responsibilities Support students in both general education and behavior support programs. Assist with the implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) for assigned students, including promoting pro-social and safe behaviors. May be required to support other paraprofessionals in providing direct assistance to students with activities of daily living, such as eating, grooming, dressing, mobility, transfers, and the use of assistive technology/devices to ensure safe environments and prevent behavioral issues. Assist students who have behavioral challenges, using appropriate de-escalation and CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) techniques to manage dysregulation and mitigate threats to student safety. Monitor and supervise student behavior in various settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, field trips, and before/after school programs, intervening as needed to maintain a safe environment. Collaborate with site-based safety teams to implement safety and behavior plans, including 1:1 interventions for individual students. Communicate regularly with school and district safety teams regarding individual student progress, concerns, and behavioral needs. Assist teachers with the preparation of instructional materials and support the educational environment. Participate in professional development, behavior support staff meetings, and training specific to new assignments or situations. Assist administrators with safety-related tasks such as conducting searches of personal belongings when necessary. Follow behavior and safety plans with specific interventions and model these strategies for other staff members. Perform additional duties as assigned by the District School Safety Officer or Site Administrator. Working Conditions Works primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor supervision required. Frequent interaction with students exhibiting behavioral challenges which may include verbal and physical outburst. Potential exposure to bodily fluids and other health-related conditions. Flexibility in responding to varying student needs, with the ability to shift focus based on evolving situations. Physical Requirements Physical requirements Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion and movement is required to perform aspects of the job. Frequent walking, standing, and moving between different areas of the school. Regular physical interaction with students. Potential for physically demanding tasks, including lifting, transferring, or positioning students, and intervening in situations requiring de-escalation techniques. Ability to respond quickly to situations requiring immediate action to ensure student and staff safety. Equipment, Aids, Tools and Materials Uses blackboards, whiteboard, easel, bulletin board, computers, video projectors, chalk, markers, and office or instructional equipment. Mental Tasks Constant need for vigilance, attention to detail, and awareness of student behavior and safety. High level of emotional regulation and self-control in stressful or escalated situations. Ability to make quick, sound decisions, especially in managing crises or behavior incidents. Regular communication and collaboration with school safety teams, requiring effective interpersonal and problem solving skills.
