To ensure success as a bankruptcy assistant, you should possess experience in a similar role and knowledge of bankruptcy procedures applicable to the state. An outstanding bankruptcy assistant will be a highly organized team player who provides excellent support to bankruptcy lawyers.
Responsibilities:
- Processing and filing bankruptcy-related documents
- Format and proofread pleadings, letters, memos, charts, tables, graphs and other documents
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date related databases
- Gathering information from creditors, debtors, trustees, and court clerks
- Obtaining credit reports and writing Proofs of Claim
- Conducting legal research on bankruptcy-related issues
- Submitting legal documents to the Bankruptcy Court in a timely manner
- Maintaining hard copy files, as well as filing and monitoring cases on electronic platforms
Requirements:
- Must have 3+ years experience as a bankruptcy paralegal/assistant demonstrating a significant level of substantive knowledge and understanding of the practice area
- Knowledge of legal terminology, as well as national, federal, and state-specific bankruptcy procedures
- Extensive experience in preparing legal documents related to bankruptcy cases
- Experience in the electronic filing of cases on the U. S. Federal Bankruptcy Courts Electronic Case Filing System
- Must have recent experience in preparing Chapter 7 and 11 bankruptcy proceedings
- Demonstrate working knowledge of technology applicable to practice area, including Best Case bankruptcy software is essential
- Knowledge of Prolaw, Westlaw and internet search engines for research purposes
- Ability to work overtime and weekends
- Must exhibit a high degree of initiative in managing multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, detail-oriented work environment utilizing excellent judgment, and decision-making skills
- Ability to collaborate with attorneys and clients
- Ability to conduct legal research, keep clients informed, and adhere to submission deadlines
- Ability to perform large volumes of work with minimal supervision
- Exceptional organizational, recordkeeping, and communication skills
The salary range for bankruptcy assistant is between $85,000 - $100,000. These figures are not representative of the full compensation range for this position.
