Automation Tech Lead Automation Technical Lead

The Automation Strategy and Operations team is seeking to add a technical leader role to the team. This role will have an engineering focus and help drive the strategic architecture and technology direction for the team across key capabilities of automation within Lilly's Automation Center of Excellence.

What You'll Be Doing:

In this position, you will impact the way automation is delivered across the company. To do this, you will help automate our platform related tasks and operations, contribute towards automating our platforms and operations, expand the catalog of connectors and APIs, create reusable components with an intent toward self-service, and engage in other engineering related activities. As a leader in the organization, you play an important role in defining and championing reliability engineering practices among engineering and product teams, participating in communities of practice and mentoring others through collaboration.

How You'll Succeed:
  • Develop a deep technical understanding of automation solutions and industry best practices. Learn the spectrum of automation capabilities and industry-leading technical platforms to deliver automation value at speed and scale to business partners.
  • Align people, tools, and processes to enable rapid automation solution delivery. Identify opportunities for automation reuse and self-service across the enterprise.
  • Continuously evaluate automation tools and technologies, understand the automation technology landscape, and lead the selection and implementation of platforms-including strategies for reusable templates and APIs.
  • Design and develop robust integration strategies using connectors and APIs to accelerate delivery and support consumption by both business and internal teams.
  • Collaborate across frontend, backend, DevOps, and delivery teams to ensure seamless API performance and reliability, anticipate demand, and introduce new capabilities into the automation portfolio.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and deployments using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD pipelines. Improve scalability, reduce toil, and implement best practices for observability and resilience.
  • Lead the automation platform architecture operations, ensuring technologies are stable, secure, performant, compliant, resilient, and reliable at scale.
  • Develop and maintain automation metrics and KPIs, including definitions, measurements, automated alerts, and dashboards to track internal service delivery and business impact.
  • Perform root cause analysis and post-incident reviews to drive continuous improvement in system stability.
  • Ensure platform stability, high level of service reliability performance, and security by implementing robust monitoring, alerting, and incident response mechanisms.

  • Demonstrated success as a technical leader, influencing strategic direction and driving implementation across complex projects and platforms.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to emerging technologies with a strong understanding of hybrid cloud, cloud-native architectures, integration strategies, and security.
  • Proven ability to provide tech leadership to diverse technical teams, foster collaboration, and drive operational improvements and business value through innovation.
  • Experience in delivering measurable, high-impact technical solutions and crafting business cases that support growth, scale, and efficiency, meeting ROI measures defined by the organisation.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a strong mindset for continuous learning and technical curiosity.
  • Practical experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) and industry-standard automation tools and delivery frameworks.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field with 6+ years of experience in application solution delivery and technical leadership
  • (OR High SchoolDiploma/GED with 8+ years of equivalent experience).
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in solution architecture, development, and end-to-end technical delivery; prior automation experience is a strong plus.
  • 5+ years of programming experience with languages such as Python, JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Node.js, Angular, React), and related modern tech stacks.
  • Strong expertise in DevOps practices and tools, including Jira, GitHub, GitHub Actions, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience in reliability engineering and monitoring practices, environments, and tools (e.g., cloud ecosystem preferably AWS, monitoring/observability, configuration management, etc.).

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate's education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$63,750 - $180,400
Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
