Athletic Director/Administrator

The Helena School District, is seeking an Athletic Director/Administrator in one of America's last best places. Helena, Montana, is a recreational destination situated at the base of the Rocky Mountain's Continental Divide. The Helena School District is nationally recognized for innovative practices meeting the needs of all students. The successful candidate must be a student-first, team oriented, collaborative and experienced educational leader. This position is responsible for operating, maintaining and organizing the overall program for interscholastic athletics, extra-curricular activities, and the drivers' education programs.

Some of what you will do:
  • Responsible for the overall direction and execution of day-to-day operations to include the coordination and evaluation of assigned programs that align with federal and state regulations as well as district policies.
  • Administer the interscholastic athletics and activity programs to include, but not limited to, sports, music, speech and debate, theatre, cheer, and dance.
  • Establish positive relationships with parents, students, staff, and the public.
  • Participate in policy and procedural decisions relevant to student issues involved in activities.
  • Provide explanation and interpretation of school programs, Board policies, procedures and laws to students, parents/guardians, staff and the community. This includes consultation on district and school eligibility rules according to the Montana High School Association (MHSA). Act as a liaison for the activities department with the Board of Trustees, AA schools, parent advisory groups, and community organizations as necessary.
  • Represent the School District in matters of interscholastic athletics with the Montana High School Association (MHSA).
  • Ensure that all activity programs function equitably and as prescribed by the Montana High School Association (MHSA), Title IX requirements, the Ridgeway settlement.
  • Develop and regularly evaluates appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of all athletic and extracurricular activities.
  • Develop and review the activities department's annual budget; analyzes and reviews budgetary and financial data; monitors and authorizes expenditures in accordance with established guidelines. Administer the student insurance program and extracurricular fees collection program.
  • Provide supervision and staffing for sporting events. Supervise and evaluate head coaches. Ensure all paid and volunteer activity personnel are cleared to work with students and are compliant with all required onboarding paperwork.
  • Develop and administer staff development in activities of coaching department.
  • Coordinate and develop practice schedules and facility coordination of athletic events (building permits/contracts) at assigned high school and other practice sites in conjunction with the Business Office and District Maintenance staff.
  • Contract contest officials; coordinate game schedule and payment.
  • Develop and review the Driver's Education department's annual budget; analyzes and reviews budgetary and financial data; monitor and authorize expenditures in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Responsible for the security, inventory, repair, maintenance, licensing, and insurance coordination of all driver's education vehicles.
  • Ensure sufficient staffing levels for Driver's Education program needs.
Who we are looking for:
  • Master's degree in educational leadership or related field from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the district.
  • At least three (3) years successful administrator experience.
  • Experience working effectively with computer and software programs, including activity-based websites, to perform the duties of the position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create trusting and productive working relationships with staff, students and the community.
  • Proven communication skills to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written form.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve in the moment and make decisions in real-time with faced when unexpected challenges.
  • Develop short and long-range plans for program needs and in compliance with regulations.
  • Willing to work scheduled Saturday events and extended/irregular work hours to meet business needs.
Certification:
  • A valid teaching certificate in conjunction with a valid administrative endorsement.
Additionally, the ideal candidate will have:
  • Experience as a head coach or director.
  • Experience mentoring coaches.
  • Experience working with and applying MHSA rules.
  • Experience in school activities management.

Annual salary starts at $121,800 per year depending on experience and a comprehensive benefit package.
