Job Title:Asst. Curator, Polar Rock Repository

Department:ERIK Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center

Job Overview:

The Polar Rock Repository (PRR) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) facility housing rock, till and dredge samples collected in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The PRR allows sample loans for research projects. The Assistant Curator position at the PRR will be responsible for assisting in cataloging collections and expanding the scope of research and educational use.


Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist with the curation of geological specimens from polar regions; performs cataloging of rock specimens, digital media, and supporting data attributes associated with the samples.
  • Assist the Curator with sample loan requests and their distribution to researchers around the world.
  • Keep statistical metrics of research and outreach activities for federal reporting requirements to the National Science Foundation for the PRR research award.
  • Assist with all educational outreach efforts for the PRR including the educational rock boxes, community tours and visits, and school activities. Educational rock boxes with polar specimens and supporting learning documents, are loaned to schools across the United States. This requires strong skills in organization and communications.
  • Record publications and abstracts where PRR samples have been used for federal reporting purposes.
  • Perform other activities or special projects as directed by manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Geological field work experience and working with physical rock/unconsolidated samples.
  • Microsoft Office suite experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
