Position Title:Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs & Development
Unit Mission Statement:The Provost is the chief academic and budget officer of the university; this office is responsible for all academic and research programs, academic budgets, institutional planning, space allocation and faculty development.
Position Summary:Reporting to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs & Development works closely with the Provost and the Provost's Executive Team on faculty advancement, diversity and inclusion programs, and professional development and training programs; coordinates annual faculty programs; mediates faculty issues; serves as a liaison to the Faculty Assembly; interprets, maintains, and updates the Faculty Handbook; and serves on university-wide or Provost-appointed committees.
Specifically, this position's responsibilities are to:
- Coordinate, administer and assess programs and processes that support the faculty lifecycle (e.g., recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, career pathways, retention, retirement, etc.).
- In collaboration with the Chief Diversity Officer, develop, implement and assess programs on diversity and inclusion programs and services related to faculty recruitment and retention.
- Identify, develop, administer, and assess professional development and training programs for faculty and chairs/program directors related to teaching, research, and leadership, including working directly with STLI on educational development programs and services to support faculty in teaching and learning.
- Coordinate annual faculty programs such as:
- Faculty fellowships
- Faculty awards, both internal and external (e.g. professorships, SCHEV OFA award, Plumeri/Jefferson/Graves awards, etc.)
- Participate in university initiatives and programs aimed at enhancing faculty engagement, wellbeing and wellness, as well as fostering a positive academic culture.
- Communicate regularly to recognize faculty, promote and amplify faculty work and voices, maintain the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs and Development website, and publish a regular newsletter.
- Assess and monitor faculty workload policies and practices across the schools on behalf of the Provost.
- Collect, analyze and report data related to faculty activity and coordinate various faculty surveys in which William & Mary may participate (e.g. Board of Visitors reporting, Key Performance Indicators, etc.).
- Serve as key liaison to the Faculty Assembly on behalf of the Provost.
- Work closely with the Office of the Provost and the Faculty Assembly to maintain, update, edit and clarify the Faculty Handbook. Use the Faculty Handbook to advise on faculty questions, solve problems and provide guidance.
- Facilitate communication between administration and faculty. Serve as a conduit for dialogue and messaging between various groups of constituencies.
- Coordinate with campus partners on behalf of faculty interests (e.g. Schools, IT, University Human Resources, University Libraries, etc.).
- Represent the Provost on various university-wide committees.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education administration, extensive knowledge of higher education, its structure and policies and practices
- Extensive experience working directly with faculty and senior-level higher education leadership on issues related to faculty
- Experience as a chair, program director or other leadership role with faculty
- Experience creating programs that address the needs of faculty and the institution
- Experience with higher education structures, budgets, oversight, leadership and program innovation and implementation
- Experience engaging in confidential conversations on sensitive topics
- Project management experience a plus
- Excellent data analysis and writing skills
