Associate Provost for Academic Affairs

Empire State University invites applications for the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to join a university that is growing and changing to meet the needs of learners of all ages. This is a critical position responsible for ensuring student, faculty, and staff success at SUNY Empire.

Serving as a key member of the Provost's leadership team, the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs collaboratively develops and implements strategies to support high-quality teaching, learning, research, and scholarship. The individual oversees the Center for Teaching and Learning, Empire Online (i.e., instructional design and educational technology services), the Office of Graduate Studies, the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Library, and the Office of Credit for Prior Learning. Additionally, the individual represents Academic Affairs for labor management issues and engages with shared governance partners for matters related to policy creation and implementation.

The successful candidate will be a strategic, collaborative, data-driven individual with the organizational and interpersonal skills to lead teams and initiatives in service to the institutional strategic plan.

Job responsibilities include:
  • In support of the provost, serve as a key academic leader for the implementation, realization, and tracking of all Academic Affairs strategic plan objectives and goals;
  • Provide leadership for key functional offices (Center for Teaching and Learning; Empire Online; Office of Graduate Studies; Office of Sponsored Programs; the Library; and the Office of Credit for Prior Learning) that drive the university's ability to deliver high-quality, innovative, online education;
  • Function as the Academic Affairs liaison for labor management matters;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the university to develop and revise academic policy as needed;
  • Oversee academic program development;
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Provost.


Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • A terminal degree from an accredited U.S. Institution or comparable non-U.S. institution;
  • 5 or more years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, with demonstrated effectiveness in building strategies for student, faculty, and staff success;
  • Evidence of the ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders in a complex organization;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working effectively in a highly regulated or unionized environment;
  • Demonstrated success in implementing a strategic plan and strategic budgeting;
  • Experience working effectively in an organization that serves diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience with online education.

Special Information:
  • This position requires a physical presence in Saratoga Springs, NY, with robust remote work options available.
  • Occasional travel to other locations and events may be required.

Additional Information:
Rank/Salary: Management-Confidential / $170,000-$185,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
