The Florida State University (FSU) College of Medicine's Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases (IPRD) invites applications for the position of Professor and Director of the Viral Vector Core Facility.

Responsibilities

This position offers a unique opportunity to build and lead a vital research resource at FSU, dedicated to supporting cutting-edge gene therapy and molecular biology research in pediatric rare diseases. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of the Viral Vector Core Facility, providing expertise and resources for the production and application of adeno-associated virus (AAV), lentivirus (LV) and other viral vectors for gene transfer in cells, tissues, and organ systems.

The successful candidate will:

  • Direct the operations of the Viral Vector Core Facility, including vector production, purification, and characterization.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure high-quality, reproducible viral vector products.
  • Provide expert consultation to researchers on vector design, development, and application for specific experimental needs.
  • Collaborate with faculty and external stakeholders to support translational research initiatives in rare diseases and related fields.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant biosafety and regulatory requirements for viral vector production and use.
  • Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and the recruitment and training of facility staff.
  • Develop strategies to expand the facility's capacity and capabilities in response to evolving research demands.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in viral vector technology and integrate new methodologies into the facility's offerings.
  • Participate in teaching medical (M.D.), physician assistant (P.A.) and other graduate programs (Ph.D.) as well as the undergraduate integrated medical sciences (IMS) program.
Qualifications

Educational Background: A Ph.D. in molecular biology, virology, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in gene delivery systems, vector design, and current trends in gene therapy.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects, lead multidisciplinary teams, and foster collaborative research environments.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interface with researchers, stakeholders, and institutional leadership.
  • Experience in supporting research for pediatric and/or rare diseases.
  • Familiarity with quality control measures and translational applications in a research setting.
  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience in the production and characterization of AAV, lentivirus and other vectors for gene transfer applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and managing a viral vector core facility within an academic institution.
