The Opportunity

The Office of Research at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for an associate professor or professor and the position of associate vice president for Research and Scholarship. This is a full-time, 12-month, tenured faculty position, located on the UCF Main Campus in Orlando, and reports directly to UCF's vice president for Research and Innovation. The position offers a significant opportunity for professional administrative leadership and impact in an organization that is growing rapidly.

Responsibilities associated with this role will include:
  • Oversight and management of internal research initiatives and funding programs. Assessing the need for new or revised programs and overseeing their implementation.
  • Oversight of Office of Research Centers and Institutes: Florida Space Institute (FSI), Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), and NanoScience Technology Center (NSTC).
  • Direction and oversight of shared core research facilities, including clean room, machine shop, NMR facility, animal support facilities, the Major Characterization Facility (MCF), and Research I.
  • Management of Research Strategy Councils within UCF's areas of strategic focus.
  • Operational oversight of Human Research Protection Program (HRPP)/Institutional Review Board (IRB)/Office of Animal Welfare (OAW)/ IACUC.
  • Implementation and assessment of strategic initiatives from the UCF Research Enterprise Plan.
  • Collaborate with the UCF Partnership division to develop impactful research partnerships. Organize and manage efforts to connect external partners to UCF SMEs to foster collaborations that lead to sponsored research.
  • Represent the Office of Research as a collaborative liaison with the Faculty Senate Research Council. Work collaboratively with other UCF leaders to develop and revise policies that support the UCF Research Enterprise.
  • Facilitate regular listening sessions with researcher groups and Associate Deans for Research to enhance operations, address common concerns and develop sustainable solutions that support researchers' needs.
  • Collaboration with the Office of Research leadership team to optimize operational efficiency, reduce faculty/researcher administrative burden, and recognize the roles and expectations of their respective offices.
  • Assist with development and management of research data analytics tools.
  • Participation in academic program reviews.
  • Represent the Office of Research on internal and external committees and boards at the direction of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (ex., ORAU Councilor, APLU, etc.).
  • Regular ROI assessment of operational strategic investments.
  • Collecting and analyzing data, including Academic Analytics and other institutional tools to measure research performance and benchmarking.
  • Serve in the absence of the Vice President for Research and Innovation for speaking engagements, presentations, and overviews of the Office of Research and can develop engaging presentations for our external and internal partners.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A doctorate or other terminal degree from an accredited university.
  • A strong track record of demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, a record of scientific publications, and experience in applying for external funding, commensurate with expectations to hold a position of associate professor or professor with tenure.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a university setting.
  • In order to obtain tenure, the selected candidate must have a demonstrated record of teaching, research, and service commensurate with rank in a department/school related to the candidate's area of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ten years of experience performing research tasks, sponsored by federal, industrial, and government sources.
  • Proven publication record.
  • Award management experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Prior management experience with professional staff (A&P, USPS, or similar) of varying levels of experience and title.
  • Proficiency in English (Spanish a plus).
