The California Department of Public Health is currently hiring for an Assistant AND Associate Health Physicist within the Division of Radiation Safety and Environmental Management. The ideal candidate would represent our Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) and plays a vital role in ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials by applying radiation control regulations and policies.
The role will involve utilizing specialized health physics knowledge to develop policies, procedures, regulations, information technology integration, and technical and non-technical training. Duties also include the licensing of radioactive materials, radioactive materials decommissioning projects (including financial surety), conducting engineering and safety evaluations of radioactive sealed sources and devices containing radioactive sources, and performing other complex health physics work.
This position does require occasional travel while assisting with various on-site facility inspections and assessments.
Responsibilities:
Develops, reviews, and analyzes complex and politically sensitive information notices, policies, procedures, and regulations related to the acquisition, possession, use, decommissioning, and disposal of radioactive materials.
Works on projects and tasks involving sensitive and complex rules and notices about handling radioactive materials. This includes making sure everything, from obtaining and using the materials to disposing of them, follows California laws, federal guidelines, and departmental policies. It also involves ensuring compliance with the California Administrative Procedures Act (CAPA) when creating, changing, or removing regulations as needed.
Under the direction of the Senior HP, the ideal candidate would participate in different trainings, including, didactic technical training through Nuclear Regulatory Commission-sponsored training courses
Occasional travel while assisting with various on-site facility inspections and assessments
Desirable Qualifications:
Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or by the American Board of Medical Physics in Medical Health Physics or 4 years of professional operational health physics experience exercising independent judgement in any of the following:
Previous experience around the establishment and evaluation of radiation protection programs
Experience in the design and evaluation of radiation protection aspects for various facilities
Assisting with the design and implementation of a radiation protection training course or program
Knowledge of an experimental or measurement program designed to answer questions related to radiation protection
Analysis and solution of radiation protection problems
Preparation, interpretation and implementation of recommendations and regulations
Previous experience with on-site facility inspections for radiation assessments and measurements
