ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE AND COMPLIANCE

EPACENTER is a creative youth development center in East Palo Alto that amplifies the creative potential in every young person. Harnessing the power of art, design, and technology, EPACENTER accelerates positive youth development outcomes for youth and young adults in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. EPACENTER envisions a future where all young people can become creative innovators and enjoy economic and social success in their community.
Our state-of-the-art 25,000-square-foot facility offers classes for youth (ages 6-25) in visual art, dance, music, digital media, technology, and internships in high-wage creative fields. We serve 800 youth and young adults annually.
Position Overview
The Associate Director of Finance and Compliance is a critical member of EPACENTER's leadership team, reporting directly to the Executive Director. This role manages the organization's financial operations, ensures regulatory compliance, oversees risk management, and implements systems and procedures aligned with EPACENTER's mission and leadership's strategic objectives.
The Associate Director collaborates closely with external auditors, vendors, and financial partners. This full-time, exempt position requires a detail-oriented, solutions-driven professional who thrives in dynamic nonprofit environments.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership:
- Oversee and manage all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and planning.
- Manage payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit financial reporting standards.
- Prepare accurate financial reports for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, funders, and senior leadership.
- Lead annual financial audits, tax filings, and oversee financial risk management strategies.
Compliance and Risk Management:
- Ensure organizational compliance with relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
- Manage relationships and communications with auditors, ensuring timely and accurate completion of audits.
- Identify and manage financial and organizational risks, proposing proactive strategies to mitigate risks.
Insurance:
- Manage organizational insurance coverage, including negotiating policies, assessing coverage needs, maintaining compliance with insurance requirements, processing claims, and coordinating with insurance brokers.
- Perform regular reviews of insurance policies to ensure adequate coverage for organizational operations, facility assets, special events, and compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with Operations and HR to address risk management strategies, insurance needs related to employee policies, facility usage, and liability coverage.
Operational Collaboration:
- Collaborate with the Associate Director of HR and Administration and the Associate Director of Facilities to ensure financial systems align with organizational operations and administrative policies.
- Implement and continuously improve financial processes to support effective and efficient organizational operations.
Strategic Support:
- Provide strategic financial analysis and support to the Executive Director and leadership team.
- Assist in long-term organizational planning and contribute to strategic decision-making processes.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
- At least seven years of professional experience in nonprofit finance, accounting, and compliance, including at least three years in a management role.
- Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, financial analysis, and compliance.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Suite, and financial reporting tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working at an arts institution with multiple revenue streams.
- Master's degree in business administration (MBA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- Experience managing budgets of $3 million or more, and an endowment.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Office environment with occasional local travel.
