Job Description
The Associate Director, US Therapeutics Public Affairs, is passionate about driving access and affordability for patients and elevating the value of innovative medicines through public affairs initiatives. The Associate Director will support AbbVies business priorities through issues management, external stakeholder engagement, message development and positioning, and the implementation of strategic communication campaigns.

Utilizing a high degree of critical thinking and strategic insight, the Associate Director will be a key partner to functions across AbbVies therapeutic business units on topics related to access and affordability. Reporting to the Director, US Therapeutics Communications and Public Affairs, this role will partner with Legal, Market Access, Government Affairs, Patient Services, Corporate Affairs and other internal stakeholders to provide counsel and innovative communications solutions on dynamic business issues.

This role requires an individual who understands issues impacting the pharmaceutical industry and is highly skilled in shaping and responding to external issues, working with media, and is a strong writer and editor.

Core Responsibilities:

Public Affairs Communications (50%)
  • Collaborate with key business partners including market access, government affairs and commercial to develop near- and long-term solutions to emerging issues facing the pharmaceutical industry
  • Drive consistent, empowering access and affordability communications messaging; advance AbbVie corporate narrative that educates key stakeholders on AbbVies patient affordability programs across multiple channels
  • Create insights-driven content that communicates AbbVies positions, including op-eds, media statements, position papers, blog posts, talking points, and more
Specialty Portfolio Issues Management (25%)
  • Provides strategic and timely issues management across a large portfolio of medicines
  • Serves as communications counselor to franchise on external environment
  • Interfaces with media on brand-related issues
Cross-BU Public Affairs Strategic Initiatives (25%)
  • Supports Director, US Therapeutics Communications and Public Affairs in the development of weekly internal newsletter that keeps employees up to speed on the US healthcare and competitive landscape
  • Vets, identifies and provides guidance on external engagements, including compliance with AbbVie corporate policies, for US-based commercial teams
  • Manages budgets for teams work and liaises with Finance partners to ensure accurate resource management
  • Manage and maintain a message bank of above brand product communications messaging and media statements
  • Coordinates collection of key financial and business highlights across Business Units


Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, or equivalent.
  • 8-10+ years of relevant experience in communications, public relations or public affairs
  • Proven expertise in media relations, issues management, and product communications
  • Experience in the healthcare and / or pharmaceutical industry. Strong business acumen with the ability to anticipate company and team needs, including strong understanding of U.S. healthcare system functioning and intricacies.
  • Aptitude for horizon-scanning and identifying trends, headwinds and tailwinds in the external environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with knowledge of emerging communication trends and technologies
  • Ability to lead without direct authority and excel in a matrixed environment and independently drive to deliver on business objectives with senior leaders and teams
  • Confident and proactive bringing definition and scope to vague problem statements and prioritizing and problem solving in a fast-paced environment
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, flexible, creative, enthusiastic, and able to make decisions with less-than-perfect information
  • Confidence and strong presentation skills providing communications subject matter expertise to senior leaders
  • Innovative thinker who challenges the status quo to create lasting impact
  • Preferred
  • Corporate, in-house communications experience or strong agency experience supporting the biopharmaceutical or healthcare industryDemonstrated acumen in market access and affordability topic
