About the Opportunity:On July 1, 2025, Brown University will launch the
new Thomas J. Watson Jr. School of International and Public Affairs , further building on its commitment to expand and strengthen research and teaching on the world's most pressing economic, political, social and policy challenges. The Watson School will serve as home to a robust Master of Public Affairs program and a thriving undergraduate concentration, as well as faculty who conduct influential research with a global perspective. Through rigorous scholarship that crosses traditional academic boundaries, the Watson School will be driven by the conviction that policy-focused learning experiences and informed policy research solutions can change systems and societies for the better.
The launch comes at a pivotal moment for the University, the nation, and the world. The School builds on more than a decade of growth within Brown's
Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, which will serve as the foundation of the school, and offers significant opportunities for expansion in faculty, research, and educational programming.
Responsibilities:The Associate Dean of Administration and Finance, reporting to the Dean of the new Watson School of International and Public Affairs and part of the Dean's senior leadership team, is the chief operating and financial officer in the Watson School. The future incumbent will have a charge to build and maintain a best-in-class administrative operation to support the launch and then significant planned growth of the school. The Associate Dean is a strategic leader, responsible for planning and strategy around resources for the School by managing its financial, funding, and budget models. The Associate Dean oversees all operations and ensures the implementation of processes, procedures, and organizational structures to increase and maintain organizational effectiveness in the Watson School, including in areas such as finances, human resources, information technology, diversity and inclusion, faculty administration, space and facilities, and events. The Associate Dean drives operational excellence by leading teams within the Watson School that manage finances, human resources, faculty administration, and administrative operations.
The Associate Dean coordinates with leadership and senior-level staff in other offices, including the School of Professional Studies, Registrar, Bursar, Financial Aid, Office of International Student and Scholar Support Services, Insurance Office, Office of Financial Strategy and Planning, University Human Resources, Office of Institutional Research, and Office of Information Technology, to ensure the successful integration of Watson School processes with other processes at the University. Key to success in this role will be the ability to build strong relationships across campus and navigate key decisions and agreements so that the school is well supported within the university's infrastructure.
Qualifications:- At least 10 years of progressively responsible financial, human resources, and operations management experience, ideally in an academic environment, along with higher education, and research institution experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles, processes, and requirements of strategic planning, budgeting, and data reporting, for an organization of similar size and complexity of funding streams.
- Data analytics skills, evidenced by a nuanced understanding of empirical analysis and a track record of applying such skills to drive operational decisions.
- Experience leading change management.
- Knowledge of the funding mechanisms of higher education.
- Experience with the following Brown systems a plus: Banner, Workday, CollegeNET, and SOPHAS.
- Strong interpersonal skills; a record of integrating and unifying individuals with diverse agendas around creative solutions to difficult problems.
- Supervisory experience, strong management skills and commitment to developing and motivating a large and diverse team.
- Proven ability to facilitate and reach consensus in committee structure, with senior administration and with peers both internally and externally.
