JOB SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Effective teaching by way of good communication, assessment of student learning and adaptation to various levels of student preparation.
  • Provide up-to-date coursework and course-related materials.
  • Use teaching-related technologies when determined appropriate.
  • Engage in scholarly activities and research.
  • Maintain a safe and engaging learning environment.
  • Keep office hours at times convenient for students.
  • Meet with classes at their scheduled times.
  • Teach courses, both face-to-face and/or online
  • Carry out academic advising responsibilities.
  • Participate in the on-going development and implementation of programming at the department, college and university levels.
  • Reports directly to the Social Work Department Chair.
  • Responsibilities include maintaining the confidentiality of designated information and performing duties in compliance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Student Mentorship and Supervision
  • Academic Advising: Serve as an academic advisor to undergraduate students, assisting with course selection, academic planning, and progress toward degree completion.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines
  • Ability to engage and work with diverse stakeholders in the department, college, university, and larger community
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with a diverse student population
  • Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
  • Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Microsoft Office suite)
  • Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
  • Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    The successful candidate will supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate research, as well as any research assistants hired to work on grant projects.

    OTHER DUTIES:

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Doctor of Social Work (DSW) or Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work from an accredited institution of higher educationDemonstrated expertise and scholarly activity in social work.Strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring students; Commitment to teaching in a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) preferred.Five (5) years full-time post-graduate social work experience.Effective communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a positive work environment.Teaching Experience:Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate or graduate social work courses.Experience with a variety of instructional methods and pedagogical techniques suitable for diverse learning environments.Commitment to Diversity:Dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service.Experience or willingness to implement inclusive teaching practices and support diverse student populations. Communication Skills:Ability to prepare and deliver engaging presentations and lectures.

    Licensing and Certifications:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Certified Social Worker (CSW) or equivalent in experience
  • The earned doctoral degree must align with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code 44.07
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    The Assistant Professor of Social Work position is primarily based on-campus, with occasional opportunities for remote work. The position involves a combination of teaching, research, and service responsibilities, with regular office hours and participation in departmental meetings and events. Occasional travel for conferences and professional development may be required. This position requires the ability to sit, stand, and use a computer for extended periods. Occasional lifting and carrying of materials may be required during teaching and research activities.
