Description
The University of Virginia's College at Wise, a nationally ranked public liberal arts institution nestled in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Education position beginning August 2025. This is a full-time, 9-month appointment.
About the Department The UVA Wise Education Department fosters a collaborative and supportive environment where faculty work closely together on accreditation, curriculum planning, clinical faculty training, advising, and other initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities
Teach 12 credits per semester across undergraduate and graduate courses in both in-person and virtual modalities Supervise student teaching internships Participate in program development, review, and management Maintain an active research and publication agenda Build and maintain relationships with local educators and school administrators Advise and recruit students Contribute to departmental and college-wide service activities
Teaching Areas Include (primarily SPED courses with some general education)
Exceptional Children Education Diagnosis and Remediation (Elementary and Secondary) Diversity and Learning Advanced Instruction Methods Special Education foundations, methods, and implementation Educational History and Contemporary Issues
Required Qualifications
PhD/EdD in Education or related field (completion by August 2026 acceptable) Minimum three years of PK-12 teaching experience Demonstrated teaching excellence Expertise in curriculum and instruction development Strong organizational and interpersonal skills Commitment to innovative teaching approaches Excellent written and oral communication abilities
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree in Special Education or Curriculum & Instruction Experience with diverse student populations Knowledge of current special education laws, policies, and regulations Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an academic setting
Additional Requirements
Knowledge of relevant educational laws and regulations Ability to meet deadlines and work independently Strong presentation and group facilitation skills Experience managing sensitive situations with discretion
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Successful candidates will be required to demonstrate teaching competence through a teaching demonstration during the interview process.
