Position description:
The University of Virginia's College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of bioethics, who will also contribute actively to the vibrant Health, Ethics, and Society Program . The position is expected to begin August 10, 2025.
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary community of scholars in Health, Ethics, and Society, and will have a tenure home in a department appropriate to their disciplinary training, including but not limited to: Anthropology, Philosophy, Religious Studies, or the department of Women, Gender and Sexuality. The teaching load is two courses per semester with the usual research and service duties.
We are particularly interested in candidates who specialize or have expertise in the explicit analysis of, and critical engagement with, ethical theory and ethical concepts. The focus of their research might include but is not limited to: embodiment; disability; intersectionality and bioethics; systemic contributors to health inequities; biopolitics; justice and healthcare; and the ethical development of health technologies.

Minimum qualifications:
To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants must hold a PhD by the time of appointment.
Preferred qualifications:
We are seeking applicants with a Ph.D. in a field relevant to bioethics (or who expect to complete a PhD by the position start date) with a promising research trajectory. Candidates should demonstrate prior excellence in the teaching and mentorship of students (commensurate with career stage), and a willingness to contribute to the goals of the University and the scholarly life of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Health, Ethics, and Society Program.
