About This Role:

This is a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics. The position is supported as a Bridge Position with the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), providing a course release of 50% for the first five years to accelerate research efforts at Lamar University and JLab.

The successful candidate will focus on hadronic and nuclear physics research at Jefferson Lab, contributing to and enhancing the existing programs of the medium-energy group. The appointee is expected to establish and lead a robust, independent research program and actively participate in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additional responsibilities include service to the department, university, and discipline, as well as professional development and collaboration efforts.
What You'll Do - Position Responsibilities:
  • Research and Research Program Development
    • Conduct cutting-edge experimental nuclear physics research, with a primary focus on hadronic and nuclear physics.
    • Develop and lead an independent research program utilizing facilities at Jefferson Lab.
    • Publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present at professional conferences.
    • Secure external funding through grants to support research initiatives.
  • Teaching
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate physics courses as assigned.
    • Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate research assistants.
    • Develop course materials and contribute to curriculum development.
  • Service and Administrative Duties
    • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as needed.
    • Contribute to the academic and professional community through participation in relevant organizations and initiatives.
    • Assist in the recruitment and retention of physics students.
  • Professional Development and Collaboration
    • Engage in collaborative research projects with colleagues at Lamar University and Jefferson Lab.
    • Stay current with advancements in nuclear physics to enhance research and teaching.
    • Participate in training and workshops to further professional growth.

  • Strong ability to design, conduct, and lead independent research projects.
  • Expected success in securing extramural funding from the external funding agencies such as the NSF and/or DOE.
  • High expectations of teaching physics at the undergraduate and graduate levels across the entire curriculum.
  • Capacity to develop and enhance research programs that align with institutional and national priorities.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities in teaching, research, and service.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Excellent English skills are required.

Physical Requirements:
  • Able to lift 25 pounds and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing, and walking between buildings.

Job Conditions:
  • Standard academic work schedule, with occasional evening or weekend responsibilities to meet research, teaching, or administrative deadlines.
  • Position requires on-campus teaching with potential remote collaboration for research activities.
