TITLE: Assistant Professor English Composition and Rhetoric

JOB SUMMARY:

Teach first-year composition courses.

This is a nine-month, tenure-track position. KSU faculty are teacher-scholars with a focus on undergraduate teaching and a commitment to the liberal arts. Teaching faculty are responsible for providing the learning activities and support that will lead to the achievement of the course objectives and enrich the educational environment of the university and surrounding community. Composition instructors teach 12 credit hours per semester, which includes responsibilities such as preparing for classes, reviewing, and developing curriculum, teaching methods and assessments that contribute to the English department and the general education program of a Historically Black University.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach undergraduate and possibly graduate courses in rhetoric and composition, with a focus on academic, technical, and/or digital writing.
  • Develop and refine curriculum that integrates contemporary theories and practices in writing and communication.
  • Engage in scholarly research related to rhetoric, composition, and writing pedagogy, with an emphasis on digital/multimodal, academic, and/or technical writing.
  • Monitor and evaluate students' progress, maintaining accurate records of grades, attendance, and other relevant data, and provide timely feedback on their academic performance.
  • Connect students to appropriate campus resources and maintain accurate records of student progress.
  • Mentor and advise students in their academic and professional development.
  • Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to enhance writing across the curriculum and support interdisciplinary initiatives.-
  • Contribute to departmental and institutional service through committee work, program development, and community outreach.
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in writing technology and pedagogy.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that respects diverse student backgrounds and promotes equity.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with students, colleagues, and staff in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Organizational skills to manage course materials, assignments, grading, and administrative responsibilities efficiently
  • Knowledge of composition theories, rhetorical strategies, and writing pedagogies is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with current technologies, digital tools, and online platforms used in teaching writing is highly desirable.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    Some supervision of student teachers in conjunction with lead teacher in the public school system.

    OTHER DUTIES:

    Working with others within the English and Education departments on program and course assessment for NCATE, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, SACS and other regional and national accrediting organizations.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A terminal degree in English, Composition, Rhetoric, or a related field. A Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience teaching college-level writing courses is highly desirable.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    The work is mostly sedentary. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying papers, books and other small items. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
