TITLE: Assistant Professor English Composition and Literature

JOB SUMMARY:

Teach undergraduate courses in English Composition and literature.

This is a nine-month, tenure-track position. KSU faculty are teacher-scholars with a focus on undergraduate teaching and a commitment to the liberal arts. Teaching faculty are responsible for providing the learning activities and support that will lead to the achievement of the course objectives and enrich the educational environment of the university and surrounding community. Primary responsibilities are to plan, develop and teach upper-level courses in literature and composition courses in the General Education curriculum in the best manner to facilitate student learning.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The successful candidate will teach courses as assigned in the English Department, including upper-level English literature classes, first-year writing, and other English courses. In addition to these duties, faculty members will teach in the day, evening and online programs; maintain office hours, attend meetings, and participate in the governance of the college at the department, discipline, campus, and college-wide levels; and perform other duties within scope of this position as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Mastery of course content and demonstrated leadership ability
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates interest in interdisciplinary teaching, service learning, technology, and adult learning methodologies including collaborative and distance learning
  • Demonstrates ability to develop and implement instructional approaches such as service learning, civic engagement, and the effective use of technology.
  • Commitment to diversity in teaching and learning
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    No supervisory responsibility.

    OTHER DUTIES:

    Work with other English faculty in shaping the curriculum of English course offerings at KSU.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    A Ph.D. in English and experience teaching full-time at the college level are both required. The candidate should possess strong oral and written communication skills, be able to teach students from a variety of backgrounds and demonstrate knowledge of instructional technology and assessment practices. Must possess the ability to teach effectively using a variety of methods, relate to diverse students, and facilitate student learning. Must show evidence of strong scholarship or scholarly potential.

    The successful candidate is expected to perform the following responsibilities:

  • Teaching upper-level undergraduate courses in English literature and first-year composition in face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities.
  • Serving on committees within the department, college, university and/or professional community service.
  • Maintaining a consistent schedule of scholarship/research activity or professional creative activity and productivity.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    The work is mostly sedentary. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying papers, books and other small items. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
