The Role:

As Assistant Payroll Manager, you'll be a key point of contact for both clients and internal staff. You'll support the Payroll Manager in delivering a timely and accurate payroll service across a broad range of clients-each with their own unique requirements.


This is a technically involved position, perfect for someone who enjoys going beyond standard processing to resolve complex queries, support junior team members, and ensure legislative compliance across the board.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the end-to-end processing of multiple client payrolls (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, and annually)
  • Acting as a point of escalation for technical payroll queries from clients and team members
  • Reviewing and checking payrolls prepared by juniors to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Assisting with onboarding new clients and understanding bespoke payroll requirements
  • Supporting payroll year-end processes including P11Ds and PSA submissions
  • Keeping up-to-date with payroll legislation, statutory changes, and HMRC guidelines
  • Training and mentoring junior payroll staff, supporting their development and knowledge
  • Contributing to process improvement initiatives within the department

About You:

  • You'll have proven experience working in a client or bureau payroll environment
  • Strong technical understanding of payroll legislation, pension schemes, and statutory payments
  • Confident communicator who can build lasting client relationships
  • Accurate and methodical, with excellent attention to detail
  • Proactive and able to manage changing deadlines and priorities
  • CIPP qualified or working towards it would be a strong advantage
