Summary & Objective

The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing a safe and developmentally appropriate program in compliance with agency policies and procedures, regulatory agencies' requirements, funding sources' stipulations, and accreditation guidelines.

The incumbent must demonstrate competency to provide effective and nurturing teacher-child interactions, plan and implement learning experiences to ensure effective implementation and use of curriculum and assessment that promotes children's progress, including children with disabilities and dual language learners as appropriate, as well as be able to respectful, culturally responsive and build trusting relationships with families.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in planning and implementing activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of the children in the program.
  • Assist in ensuring the learning environment is clean and safe.
  • Assist in comforting children and building their self-esteem.
  • Assist in fostering reasoning and problem solving through active exploration and increasing the level of interaction.
  • Assist in the development of culturally appropriate programs and activities.
  • Assist in the development of the daily lesson plan with the teacher.
  • Assist in the development of various activities that introduce math, literacy, science, music, games, and gross motor.
  • Assist in the observation of children and make notes of progress.
  • Assist in ensuring the children are supervised at all times.
  • Assist in establishing routines and providing positive guidance.
  • Assist the teacher in clearly and effectively communicating in a manner that children understand.
  • Assist in the supervision of parent/legal guardian signature, making sure is recorded on a daily basis in the center's sign-in/out log, and ensures that no child is dismissed with a person other than those identified in the center's registration card.
  • Assist in the administration of medicine and dispensation of first aid, conducted in accordance with guidelines.
  • Assist in providing a safe and secure environment for children to feel comfortable.
  • Assist in the implementation of positive discipline when required.
  • Assist in the integration of special needs children in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Responsible for being familiar with emergency procedures.
  • Assist with providing family-style meal service in a pleasant atmosphere.
  • Assist in the discussion and documentation of children's development with parents as per guidelines.
  • Assist during the period of Home visits and parent-teacher conferences as per guidelines.
  • Assist in keeping parents informed of program expectations, program activities, and the child's progress positively and tactfully.
  • Responsible for participating in community activities.
  • Responsible to prepare and submit to the direct supervisor a written record of accidents or unusual incidents and child abuse and neglect, according to guidelines.
  • Visually assesses or screens the general health condition of children at arrival time and completes the Health Alert form if necessary
  • Develop and maintain current, accurate, and confidential client information

Other Duties

  • Demonstrates flexibility when the work schedule needs to be changed to meet the needs of the center
  • Attend conferences, trainings, and staff meetings as required
  • Maintain a deficiency-free and 90% compliance in the safety area and regulations
  • Complies with all personnel policies and procedures, including but not limited to dress code, wearing of name badge, professional image and conduct, punctuality, and work attendance
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect towards persons of different cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Provides orientation to new employees as needed.
  • Maintain your required certifications and mandatory skill updates.
  • Comply with all policies, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • May serve as an interim department leader depending on need.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds., walk, climb stairs or ladders, stand on feet for extended periods of time, etc.

Requirements:

Knowledge & Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential in Pre-School or
  • State-awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential or
  • Enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree
  • CPR & First Aid Certificate
  • Bilingual - English / Spanish
  • Department of Children and Families 45 mandatory training hours must be obtained within 6 months of employment
  • Analytical, decision, and problem solving skills
  • Effective verbal and listening skills
  • Stress management skills
  • Time management skills
  • Must have knowledge of computer office software
  • Must be able to read, write and understand the English language

The incumbent must obtain CDA Credential in Pre-School or 12 credits in early childhood education within 1 year of employment.
