DescriptionSummaryThis position serves as the Assistant Emergency Management/Safety Coordinator providing comprehensive support to the Emergency Management Director in support of critical base business operations when dealing with natural and or manmade disasters. The position will coordinate complex disaster response procedures with other emergency response departments and agencies within the SW Kansas region. This position is under the general supervision of Emergency Management Director and/or his/her designee.
Definition and Examples of Work30%Manages safety training and safety administration.
- Conducts monthly, quarterly, and annual safety training as needed.
- Enforce and maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Develop curriculum relative to worker safety to include a training implementation strategy.
- Assist in the deployment and delivery of practical safety training to new hires, county employees and public entities.
- Participate in safety meetings, assist in incident investigations to identify root cause.
- Perform workplace safety inspection to identify potential safety hazards.
- Engage with various department directors relative to safety vulnerabilities and improvement strategies.
- Develop a safety plan in accordance with base business requirements.
- Distributes Personal Protective Equipment.
30%Organizes SARA Title III hazardous materials planning.
- Manages Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and hazardous chemical forms
- Responsible for facilitating and designing a process to log all Tier 2 material on an annual basis.
- Develop a system to identify and track hazardous material utilized by county employees in accordance with safety data documents.
- Maintains Material Safety Data Sheets.
20%Assists in departmental planning and administration.
- Assist in the development of long- and short-term goals to enhance department response readiness.
- Assist with budget preparation, inventory control, grant development and cost recovery functions.
- Schedules and organizes complex activities such as meetings, travel, conferences, and department activities for all members of the department.
- Functions as a critical team member within the Incident Command Structure aligned with emergency response and mitigation protocols.
- Sorts and distributes mail. Drafts written responses or replies by phone or e-mail when necessary.
- Answers incoming calls for Emergency Management. Takes messages or fields/answers all routine and non-routine questions.
- Types and designs general correspondences, memos, charts, tables, graphs, business plans, etc. Proofreads copy for spelling, grammar, and layout, making appropriate changes. Responsible for accuracy and clarity of final copy.
- Responsible to coordinate yearly emergency equipment inventory
20%Works on special projects
- Develops public and private partnership with business sector to enhance emergency response readiness.
- Plans and coordinates multiple presentations, disseminating information, coordinating direct mailings, creating brochures.
- Creates and develops visual presentations as requested by supervisor.
Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.
Requirements- Basic literacy and numerical functions.

- Valid driver license
- American Red Cross course: First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor within six months of hire
- National Safety Council Defensive Driving Instructor within six months of hire
- NIMS ICS certifications within one year of hire (pending certification timelines thru state agencies)
- Ability to attain a state and or nationalize safety certification
- Occasional travel
- Occasional overtime required
- Regular and reliable attendance onsite at work location
