Job Description:

Budget Title: Assistant Dean (SL-5)

Salary: $95,000 - $105,000

The Graduate School seeks a creative and forward-looking individual to serve as the primary coordinator of graduate student success initiatives. The Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Success will be responsible for supporting the academic and professional success of graduate students at Binghamton University-SUNY. This individual will contribute to the development and implementation of a strategic plan for improving graduate student retention and completion rates, developing mechanisms to reduce time-to-degree, and tracking outcomes for doctoral graduates. In addition to having a student-centered approach, the successful candidate will collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus departments to support best practices in graduate education at the individual, programmatic, and university-level. The successful applicant should have outstanding communication skills, the ability to work both independently and in teams to achieve goals/deadlines, and the willingness to engage the national and international discourse on the future of graduate education. The ability to work with data extraction, organization, and analysis is crucial for this role.

Duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Develop proactive training resources for academic colleges, departments, programs, and other key stakeholders to enhance graduate student success
  • Monitor and assess individual student progress, identifying at-risk students and offering proactive support and intervention
  • Build systems that are transparent and sustainable for communication by drawing on technology-enabled solutions
  • Develop and automate academic alerts and communication of critical information regarding academic status, program milestones, and deadlines
  • Develop and implement evidence-based strategies and programs that support graduate student engagement, success, and persistence
  • Provide regular reports to university leadership, including recommendations to improve graduate student success, identify programmatic trends, and build programmatic interventions as necessary
  • Track outcomes for graduate students post-graduation, including data summaries and metrics necessary to support external training grant and fellowship applications
  • Assists with the coordination of graduate student awards, such as the Graduate Student Excellence Awards, and the orientation for new graduate students
  • Coordinate responses to national surveys pertaining to graduate education such as the NSF Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) each Fall, Spring and Summer
  • Collaborate with, and effectively communicate complex materials to, a diverse group of individuals including students, faculty, staff, senior administrators, community and industry partners, donors, and visitors

Requirements:
  • Master's Degree (or higher)
  • Relevant experience and growing leadership, with proven office administration and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Experience working with confidential information
  • Experience with business management tools including spreadsheets, word processing, calendar tools, and presentation software
  • Familiarity with a range of social media platforms
  • Ability to work on and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
  • Detail oriented with excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred:
  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree (i.e. EdD)
  • Professional experience in a college or university setting
