Duties
Under direct supervision, the duties require the exercise of judgment in learning and assisting in the determination and review of routine tax assessments of real properties.
This is a competitive class trainee position. The period of trainee service shall be one year from the date of appointment from an appropriate eligible list, the service to be of such designated length as to satisfy the training and experience requirements for Assistant County Assessor. Upon the satisfactory completion of the designated trainee service, which also serves as the probationary period, an Assistant County Assessor Trainee shall obtain permanent status as an Assistant County Assessor.
NOTE: Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
Minimum Qualifications

Training and Experience
Graduation from high school
and
Three years of satisfactory experience valuating real estate.
Necessary Special Requirement
Possession of an appropriate class, valid New York State Driver License. Must have available for use an operable automobile for the purpose of conducting on-site assessment duties.
NOTE: 1.Completion of one year (30 credits) of education at a regionally accredited or
New York State registered college or university may be substituted for the
above-mentioned experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of
three years.
2. Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County
Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
NOTE: In order to receive credit for "valuating real estate" the experience must have included utilizing the market, cost and income approaches to real estate valuation and have received a fee for officially doing so. Candidates who claim experience in judicial review must specify that this experience included utilizing market, cost and income approaches to real estate valuation. Experience in real estate sales will not be accepted.
NOTE: According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination, may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: A written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and /or abilities in the following areas:
Name and number checking - These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.
Understanding and interpreting written material - These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.
Data collection - These questions test for a knowledge of the variables that are collected for residential, commercial, vacant and farm properties.
Hypothetical situations may be used to test for candidate knowledge, skill, and ability in this area. The majority of these questions are based on the terms, concepts, and principles of data collection that are contained in the Department of Taxation and Finances' data collection manuals which can be found at
Real property terminology, documents and forms - These questions test for a knowledge of terminology, documents, and forms pertaining to real property. While some questions ask for only straight definitions, others are situational questions which require the use of real property terms to determine the answer to the questions.
